and this is why shark and i feel the OLB's are overrated all have flaws and we saw dean's past man crushes . remember moses anyone ?

if you draft a guy who at worst will be a great OG like larry allen please tell me the downside again ?

We've been through this a million times but since you asked:

A. There is very little chance Scherff is going to be as good as Larry Allen. Some here act like he 's a Steve Hutchison type of prospect. He isn't. Not sure how you figured the worst this pick could end up being is a player as good as a Hall of Famer. That is the best case scenario, not the worst.

B. We don't even know if he can make the transition to guard.

C. He has pass protection issues

D. You can find great guards without spending the 5th overall pick on one. The greatest guard prospect in our lifetime was Hutchison and he didn't get picked until the 17th pick. And again nobody is confusing Scherff with Steve Hutchison. For reference Larry Allen went 46th and the vast majority of the starting guards around the league were drafted after the first 2 rounds.

E. The object of the draft is not to pick scared to make a mistake, which is exactly what over drafting Scherff would be doing.

a) i totally disagree you take the BPA that fixes a need . the top rated o/lineman in the draft is a good place to start . you take what we say as the worst case scenario and make it the primary one . we are drafting a RT who should get top coaching and could be a perennial PBRT

b) we dont know if any of the current crop of OLBS can make the transition to 3-4 OLB . we dont know what any rookie can do and ray gregory fowler and beasley all have questions as well and i have murphy in the 2 hole
c) again you are using the secondary fall back position as the primary one . most people believe scherf is another martin a rookie PB/all pro OG so why not draft a guy who can be this good at a secondary fall back position . we have a top o/line coach in the game . i have little doubt scherf can make scherf a formidable RT
d) since when is drafting a top 9 prospect at a position of need drafting scared ? we need to hit on this pick but taking the BPA atr position of need 4 spots early hardly qualifies as drafting scared

Funny... I tyhought the object of the draft was to pick players to improve your team.

Seems like alot of people are closet Snyder buyers and want the guy who will sell seats and jerseys more so than the boring pick hat would actually make the team better.

As for where guys were picked, hind site is always 20/20. You think Brady would have made it to the 6th round? Or Romo go undrafted if the NFL knew then what they know now??

So yes BEST case Scherff turns into Larry Allen... worst case Tre Johnson. You telling me you wouldnt give up the 5th pick for another Tre JOhnson

I'll just say my preference at 5 has absolutely nothing to do with selling jerseys and it has everything to do with wanting to make the team better. Your goal is to come away with an impact player at 5, a real game changer. Scherff isn't "boring", he simply is not a game changer. So Hell yeah he's the "safe pick' and that is the very definition of drafting scared. Scared to make a mistake is no way to approach the draft.

Again these are my thoughts if we take him at 5. If we trade back and take him at 10-12 I'm absolutely fine with that pick.

That's a big IF. IF we know he's the next Larry Allen, a guard that revolutionized the position with his raw strength, we obviously take him. But we don't know that. What we do know is that he's an OG, and that OGs aren't taken at #5 overall. We also know that prospects like Fowler, although imperfect, are legit top flight pass-rushing OLBs. Pairing someone like Fowler with Kerrigan at the other OLB spot and Knighton as a one technique, we can transform the front seven of our defense. (We still need a FS, and badly.)

In a nutshell, this comes down to a question of value and BPA that fits a need. Drafting Scherff without knowing he's going to be the next Larry Allen would violate all conventions of draft selection with a fifth overall pick. On the other hand, OLBs like Fowler are taken that high. As for BPA, Fowler is clearly the BPA than Scherff. Putting those two factors together, you get Fowler as the better guy at #5.

What if we trade down and Scherff is available at say #10 overall? That's a whole new ballgame.

No way in hell do I use the fifth overall pick for a Tre Johnson. I loved the guy when he was here. But he's not worth a pick that high.

I disagree about Scherff.....If he comes in and starts immediaetly, and is a mauler in the run game, like his reputation is...and his pass blocking keeps the QB upright......then yes....that would be a gmae changer as the QB can do his job leading the team to victories....

Considering Bryant Young was picked 7th, where he should have been, and was a much better player yes I'd pass on Tre Johnson at 5.

Russ Grimm was as good as it gets. So was Lawrence Taylor. Only one made game changing plays.

dont know about that.....>Without Grimm...are we running Riggins down peoples throats?? Oline is hard to make those game changing plays you refer to becasue of the position...but doing their job enables others to make those game changing plays

We are using extreme examples. Every Redskins fan understand what the Hogs meant to our history. But this prospect is not Russ Grimm, Larry Allen or Steve Hutchison. He is projected to be a damn good starting guard and God knows we need plenty of them. But let's not assume a guy switching positions who has had pass blocking issues at tackle is the next Larry Allen.

Again there is a reason guards are never taken with the 5th overall pick and it's very simple: you can find similar value later in the draft. The draft is about maximizing value. And I'm sorry, taking the safe pick because you are afraid to miss is a chicken shit way to draft. It's playing scared.

Shark: Fowler is not a safe pick at #5? WHAT!!!! Well put DGfan. Moses is only a rookie cant pass judgment on him yet. Sherff will not be a top 5 pick not even top 10.

Agreed. If we thought a punter in the draft was the next Ray Guy, do we take him at #5 overall because he's safe and a Hall Of Famer?

Really, so you think swapping out Grimm, or even Tre Johnson for say Chris Chester wouldnt be game changing?? Would Sherff make picks and sacks or sports center moments?? Not a chance. Would he change the entire offense by allowing our QB time to pass and our RB the actual space to run?? Thats the kind of game changer I want. Im tired of seeing us have a LB in the pro bowl from our 3-13 squad.

I think some of you guys are off your rockers if you want to pass on Fowler for Scherff. While Fowler may not have elite pass rushing skills, he is still a very good pass rusher & the best all around OLB in the draft. The guy can do it all.

how do you know he isnt ? you or i have no idea of what he will be or wont be

now if we draft fowler or beasley or some other pass rusher i wont get mad

what i am saying is scherf is a top 9 rated player and he plays a position that we need . as is fowler or beasley . and we have murphy
