This will be interesting. How will it affect Goodell and what kind of precedent will be set?

He can appeal it all day long. I don't think anyone would resign him anyway. Talk about a pubic relations nightmare

It's going to be a PR nightmare for everyone..Goodell, the NFLPA, Rice, the league.

As long as Rice has something in the tank and can be better than a fringe player there ought to be plenty of interested teams. Many people, myself included, abhor what he did and don't think he should be banned from pro sports.
While the league shouldn't turn a blind eye to these things, I also don't think it sends a good message that anyone who ever made a mistake should be ostracized from employment.

I wouldn't look too much into last seasons stats to gauge his ability to play. The Ravens had major issues on the OL and he was banged up for the first time in his career.

I feel that he did the Ravens a favor with his actions and gave them a reason to cut him. He was being paid like a top back in the league and I don't really see him producing like he did a few years back. He should still be a serviceable back for some team out there.

:agree:I have a daughter and seeing that would drive me to kill, but not on the 1st time...as much as I don't like what he did, Rice should and imo will play in the NFL again.

Exactly. With the way the RB position has been devalued, who would take a chance on Rice, and all the backlash that comes with him, coming off a bad year?

So you think this was the first time he smacked her around? Because I'm about 99.9% sure it wasn't. In fact I'd put good money that it has happened since and will happen again.

No way he plays for anyone this yr. Also, no way he is done for his career either.

I haven't liked him for the past 2 yrs, he had an attitude change that I think affected his play, but as Bunk said, last yr was a multi problem with oline and health, so I think he can still play, although I didn't want him as our feature back this yr anyway.....
The problem I have is that while the 9ers let a pregnant woman beater continue to play after having access to the facts, and worse yet the Vikes letting a child abuser back to play after 1 game of deactivation, Rice is labeled as the Osama bin Laden of the NFL and treated as such.....
Punished 3 times for the same offense after a final ruling was in place....
I have stated, I am disappointed in the Ravens FO for taking down his pic in the stadium and exchanging his jerseys after all the good he has done in the community and his previous play on the field, helping us win a SB....It's a shameful act IMO.....

To be honest idk, but the fact that she's standing behind him tells me nothing on this level has happen before...NFL paycheck, money in the bank, or not...I don't see her staying around if that was not the 1st time.

every expert I heard said that what they viewed on the video indicates he has done this before. they could tell by the fact that after he knocked her out he didn't bother to check on her. just let her lay there until the elevator stopped and you know the rest.

A more false statement couldn't have been said.

if you read some articles or talk to some people who have stayed in abusive relationships, you'll notice that it is the norm for these girls to act like it never happens. It is the NORM for them to defend their abuser and make excuses for them. To see her up on the poduim taking blame for her "role" and continue to go through and marry him, this is not atypical of women in abusive realtionshiops.

It makes zero sense to us on the outside, but that is pretty much the fact of the matter.

As for Rice return, I think if he follows protocol and does what he needs to do, he should be allowed to return. However, if he misses this year, he'll be a 32ish year old RB coming off his worst year as a pro followed by a year off. Not exactly a good case for signing the guy.

Please note I said "on this level"...golf buddy's wife is a licensed psych analyst..deals with a lot of DV abuse victims (and abusers) for the VA Hosp...she also echoes some of the points you've brought up, but she saw the video and she thought it was doubtful that she's taken a beating like that before...but it does enhance the chances of it happening again since she did stay with him if this guy doesn't get some help.

Agree, but nobody could run behind that OL LY...Pierce struggled too...turns 28 in Jan...these smaller stature RBs don't drop off quite as fast...some team will give him a look.

edited to note... I make no claims of being an authority on this topic, more or less going off the thought of my friend's wife who deals with this a lot.

I'm not sure if this guy is a serial beater or was bombed and snapped when she spit in his face. I wouldn't take a chance on him. Lately he said he becomes a different person when he drinks "hard alcohol". He's giving it up suppossedly but said something about still drinking wine or beer. That never works, he'll still get drunk and it very well may happen again

Yep. He already was punished, agreed to the punishment and partly served it.

Then, they unilaterally increased it.

I think the appeal is on solid ground.

Maybe both of you are right....

Could be the first time with her ...

Rice certainly isn't immediately shocked by the consequences of his actions....
