I agree what you said the other day about Lewis. I am starting to feel better about him. I think he is starting to find it.
If he does, a large part of the burden will be lifted.

Agree on Scherzer.

Wouldn't mind a Shields/Masterson combo. Depending on what Masterson is going to be looking for contract wise - that is.

No on Scherzer, but would take Masterson? He's too inconsistent for me. Shields definitely. I would also look into Gallardo (13MM club option). Lester too , but he won't be cheap.

2 different types of pitchers... 2 different paydays.

I understand that, but Masterson will still command a lot, and IMO the value won't be there. Although since 2010 he's had a bad year followed by a good one. So if the trend continues he's due for a good year next year. All signs point to inconsistency though.

For me, it's a combination of factors, the uptick in Ks, and the lack of walks while maintaining velocity, to me means he's hitting his spots, he's a flyball pitcher so HRs and some hard hit balls will always be a problem especially without elite velocity

But I'm starting to believe he's close to where he was before he got hurt, not all the way but closer

The break on his off speed has been much better too. I hope it continues. We might need him in the rotation next year. Plus he'd be cheap.

For me it's appears he's finally found a consistent release point that works, which with the surgery on the hip makes total sense,

He's throwing harder than before he got hurt more consistently and now he's not walking guys anymore

Wow, I know he's had a disappointing year but that move is surprising.

You know, our year has been a disaster (and it appears to be getting worse), but think about the Red Sox - World Series champs now in the basement of a very average AL East. We've had injuries as our very valid excuse for our crappiness, but what excuse do they have??? Did not retain Ellsbury, Salty, Drew...then panic, re-signs Drew. Team lost its mojo, you kind of knew they were " one hit wonders" anyway.

Tanaka on DL with elbow inflammation.

If this ends up with TJ surgery, then damn, what a year.

Season on the brink: The Yankees might not have been a playoff team this year even if they were healthy. However, if Tanaka is out for any extended period of time, it will mean they will have lost four-fifths of their original rotation.

CC Sabathia, their former ace, is scheduled to visit Dr. James Andrews on Monday to see if he will need microfracture surgery on his knee, which may be career-ending. Michael Pineda has been sidelined since the pine tar game with a sore upper back/shoulder. Ivan Nova is done for the season after Tommy John surgery.

Without Tanaka, the Yankees rotation would likely be: Hiroki Kuroda, David Phelps, Brandon McCarthy, Shane Greene and Chase Whitley. Even with Tanaka, the Yankees may struggle to make the playoffs. Without him, forget about it.

Perspective: Players have MRIs all the time. With injuries, the Yankees are ultra-conservative. So this might just be a precaution. Still, it is precarious.

I guess the Yankees can empathize a bit with our issues in the rotation

On MLB radio this morning, in doing their 3 teams up and 3 teams down list, Jim Memolo stated they've stopped including the Rangers on the 3 down list. He compared the Rangers in 2014 to a horse with a broken leg - you can scream at him all you want to get up and get moving, but he's done. I thought that was a good analogy.

It does look overwhelming. If I was JD, I would concentrate heavily on pitching first and foremost. We aren't signing a Scherzer or Shields, our budget won't support it (plus after this disaster, would these guys even want to come here??). We need to concentrate on the Fister, Skaggs, Miley level pitchers - affordable (comparatively) and hungry. But we need to spend our money on pitching, pitching, pitching.

As for the offense, as JD, I would have to hope and pray that Fielder comes back 100%, Choo returns to being an OBP machine, Profar is at least 80% of his potential, and Beltre has a few good years left. Odor is a keeper, Chirinos and Giminez can hold down the fort until Alfaro is ready. Martin....tough one, but I see him as a Gentry, Murphy type player. He can be brilliant defensively, but offensively he's just not consistent enough to be everyday. Speaking of Gentry, Choice may eventually work out, but that trade in the short term was a disaster for us. Elvis....I'm done with him. He's not impressed me in the least these last two seasons. Ready to trade him (although his value has diminished), he's one that needs a fresh start elsewhere, he's worn out here and it shows..

Rios is OK, but I bet he's traded this summer.

Pitching, pitching, pitching...and hope the offense can generate some level of consistency until some of the youngsters are ready.

My 2 cents, for what it's worth....

The big stumbling block to trading Elvis MAY be the big contract. Maybe. He still has good to great value IMO, but not on this team any time soon. Elvis's offense seems to have suffered the last two years because the entire team around him has gradually gotten weaker offensively. Put him in a different environment with better offense around him and a manger that's willing to keep a foot in his ass and he will probably be a better player. Just not here.
If I'm one of those billionaire owners, JD and company gets a free pass this next year, but if it's another year close to this one then everybody from JD down gets canned.

Last year they took it hard with many position players on the DL but their pitching kept them afloat.

Even before the surgery he had games where it looked like batting practice and they would tee off on him. But he is an intelligent pitcher with a bulldog mentality and he would get things figured out. I agree completely on him finding his release point. He will still have those bad games because if he is off the long ball will come. But I am very encouraged by what I am seeing. I hope it continues and he has at least another couple years in him.
