Im ok with this

same ... Paterson asked Benning how much experience he had with contract negotiations and he said he would rely heavily on Gilman for this (as did Mike Gillis)

Such a 180 from Gillis based on that presser - Down-to-earth guy, pretty low key, doesn't come off as arrogant or condescending.

i piled on the whole saying-"you know"-a-couple-hundred-times thing about Benning from the presser but Lord Linden will be the public voice for Sir Bennington Bear ... you can tell Benning isnt a toastmasters grad but its all good! (for now anyhoo)

Homie, after Gillis, I would prefer the GM to sit back and just do his job, let the Lord be the PR

Benning: "hey guys ... remember that time ... in June 2011 ... "
kind of him to keep his hand (with that ring) in his pocket though
Question: Would you ask players with NTC to waive them to facilitate a trade
Benning: Yes, to make the team better we would ask them to waive.

and boom goes the canucks internet

also with the comment that advanced stats don't work in scouting prospects.
(he had a point that the quality of competition is so variable across leagues, but hard core fancy statters will suggest they can factor that in. He also said it is valuable when looking at NHL players)

This could probably go in the Calgary thread but I found this interesting regardless:

Hume pointed out Craig Custance recently suggested the Calgary Flames as a trade destination for Marc-Andre Fleury.

yeah I saw that as well, but where would Pittsburgh go for a new goalie? Niemi? I suppose that would not be terrible at all. I dont see the Canucks trading for Marchand and I certainly dont see Edler being part of that deal. Id rather go in for the first overall instead

I dont see Marchand coming this way but the Bruins wanted Edler at the deadline if you believe the rumours ... I wonder who in the Bruins organization had the hard on for him? Benning??? lol

I think the Canucks and Bruins make at least one deal together because of Jim Benning - however, to me, it would seem like the Bruins won't have much cap room to play with - the cap penalty for the bonuses + they have to re-sign Iggy, Torey Krug and Reilly Smith - I'm thinking if they did make a deal together, a higher salary would go to Vancouver or maybe Vancouver eats a fair amount of Edler's deal and they get a little bit more in return from Boston - I dunno

I think that might be an upgrade for the Penguins, but as the article stated, I don't see them being interested in Fleury - I think they like Karri Ramo a lot actually - and I don't think the Flames are giving up much for a player with one year left on his contract

Maybe the Canucks do a Kesler deal with Anaheim like this:

Canucks get:
10th overall pick, ANA first round pick this year, Sami Vatanen, Emerson Etem and Mathieu Perreault

Ducks get:
6th overall pick and Ryan Kesler

What would you think of that? Is moving down from 6th to 10th worth making that deal?

eating any salary will kill any deal. Aquilinis wont go for that with luongo on the books for so many years and nor should they to deal Edler, if we have to eat any fair amount of Edlers deal I would rather keep him, while he had the worst year of his career imo, hes still pretty solid a dman. A hockey deal can be made with his cap hit which is low for a top 4 dman

i dont know enough about those players and I would not be upset to move to 10th from 6th if the right youth came back ready to play. no problem at all with that part

it sounds like (from the way Benning talked) that canucks like Ritchie/Perlini ... they might still be available at 10

i dont think the ducks will give up that much

Yeah, I agree with jstew, that seems like an awful lot for the Ducks to part with for Mr. Fraser Valley Wireless.

I added Sami Vatanen to that list because the Canucks should be really, really interested in him - but I don't think the Ducks would move him - but I think they'd possibly move either Emerson Etem or Kyle Palmieri, along with Mathieu Perreault and the two first round picks

To me with the extra draft pick the Ducks have, they should use that as a trade chip because they already have a ridiculous amount of young players - they need to shore up their current roster via trade
