I had heard that Devante Smith-Pelley might have been in play as well, but after his playoff performance, I don't think that's the case any longer.

from my canucks perspective, I would have done that ... Botchford had said Murray only wanted to part with draft picks though

Yeah I heard that about the draft picks too - that's why Bob Murray couldn't get anything done because he didn't want to part with any roster players - now that it's the offseason he might think twice

Since 2000, Vancouver has had:
The most drafts in which their selections failed to combine for 50 career NHL games played.
The most drafts in which their selections failed to combine for 100 career NHL games played.
The most drafts in which their selections failed to combine for 250 career NHL games played.

Buffalo and Montreal were the best on that list

And I'm not sure that I would say the Canucks did better than Tampa - Tampa did get Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman so that counts for something

just going by 51.6 games per pick over 34 for TB.
Stamkos and Hedman were can't miss picks.

Nucks have had ONE pick inside the top 10 since 2000, which was last year (9) so he has not had a chance to get any games in,
while TB has had six in that span, including 1 overall (Stamkos) and #2 overall (Hedman). other than the gimme's they've been beyond awful
whereas the nucks have just been awful :L :gaah:

Tampa Bay drafted Ondrej Palat late and he looks like a good one and Kristers Gudlevskis might turn out to be worth something decent maybe not in Tampa but elsewhere

They certainly weren't that good but the Canucks have to do better at drafting, and it's not like they're getting real late 1st rounders, they've gotten bounced out of the playoffs a lot of times relatively early, besides the run to the Cup so they should have had decent enough picks to make something out of it

That worked out well for us

Well that was more so in the early 2000s, they had some really good picks that turned out to be good players - that's when the Sabres were in their hey day in the early to mid 2000's when they were winning - lately yeah it hasn't been as great

Games played is a mis-leading stat sometimes though since it doesn't account for the team's current situation or the quality of those players.

Obviously there are going to be players who are going to play immediately regardless because of their talent level (Crosby, Ovechkin, etc.) but a lot of times it's going to be the bad teams that have the highest GP from their drafted players, at least in the short term. Take last year as an example. The Sabres were abysmal and they had the 2nd highest GP from their draft picks. In that particular case it's because even rookies were better than the crap they had on their roster.

But even those 2000 and surrounding year drafts were a lot of career 3rd or 4th line types of guys or guys who played most (or all) of their games elsewhere, like Ballard and Wideman. The only guys in those 4 years that could really be considered top level players (that stayed in Buffalo for a while at least) were Pominville and Vanek.

what were Dutch Gretzkys stats during the lockout in Holland

reason i ask ... canucks coaching candidate Willie Desjardins put up 107 in 52games in the 83-84 season

give him the nickname!!!

/although a bit suspicious that Desjardins stats are the only players stats listed on hockeydb for the 1983-84 Dutch Hockey league season
