In 2011 the cap was 120.3 mil
In 2012 the cap was 120.6 mil
In 2013 the cap was 123.0 mil

It does go up but damn it's difficult to squeeze a 53 man roster and 8 practice squad players in that cap.

Do you know what else goes up? The cap hits on the existing contracts in place. And in the case of the Lions they go up a ton because its all pushed back.

We signed five, for lack of a better term we will call them "impact players" last offseason. Quin, Houston, Jones, Bush, and Levy. Their contracts on a per year average across all five is $4.03m. We managed to sign them because the cap hits that came across those five deal only averaged $2.04m last year. This year they average $4.16m, a 104% increase. That bump in salary cap for this year doesnt cover that.

BTW, most of those contracts, at least the largest three, are four or five years in length so those cap hits will get larger in the years to follow.

Well considering it has only gone up 3 million in 3 years the fact that it is going up 7 million this year should be a nice relief for teams. It also is expected to make a big jump next year as all the CBS money for Thursday Night Football games should get factored in so we might see a nice two year jump in the Cap. Only problem that also means contract prices go up from here on out. So a player that used to make $7 million a year will be looking for $8-9 million a year.

I get the argument about pushing back the cap and I agree, my point was that 130 makes it easier to get everyone signed with out having to push back this year. Hopefully the first step to getting the cap under control......being a dick about it works too though.

That could be huge for DET an others obviously. I'll wait for the owners meetings when it becomes official as to what the cap will be, which is March 23-26.
