Ring Ring Ring, "hello", "hey Reggie its Martin Mayhew calling, wondering if the Raiders might be in need of a DT".

You can laugh, cringe, cry or whatever you want but I absolutely believe the Lions get better by subtraction here. You can make the justifiable arguement that we might miss on the extra picks we get if we pulled a trade but you could counter that by saying that they might become pro bowlers or even that Suh's could drop way off.

What you almost cant argue however is that it greatly helps or cap position, to the point where the Lions would actually be in pretty good shape in 2015.

........:10:......... that's right... through-in-through-out
If Mayhew gives Suh 14-15 mil per year we're fucked.... period....

I'll re-state what I'd wish for Mayhew to do in this draft.... If Watkins or Mack aren't there at #10, then trade down to the 18-22 slots...... Hypothetical #10 to #12 for a 4th (NYG Lewan or Ealy ahead of Ten) #12 to #14 for a 4th (Chi Dix or Gilbert, ahead of Rams) #14 to #18 for a 3rd (NYJ Ebron or Evans ahead of Pit).... Maybe Pryor or Dix is still there at #18

They had a video on CBS today where an agent talks about Suh's situation with the Lions. He said for the Lions to re-sign him, they basically have to give him a blank check and have him fill it out on what it will take to keep him.

He said -- if Suh was drafted one year later, his contract would have been for 21 million over 5 years, instead of looking at a season where his cap hit for one year that is more than that contract.

Lastly, he stated if Suh had been drafted a year later, he'd be looking at the same deal Atkins signed, roughly 11 million a year. Because of the huge cap hit, Suh has all the leverage, just like Calvin had when he signed his extension and he said if the Lions want to re-sign Suh, they will be looking at paying him as one of the highest paid defensive players regardless of position.

Ugh -- the Lions are in a terrible spot here. I don't want to see Suh on another team, but I don't want the Lions to vastly overpay and suffer elsewhere for a DT.

Sorry, this isn't much of an issue. The dude is one of the best players in the NFL, going into his prime years. Gotta pay your stars, period. Much rather pay Suh and his elite work ethic over letting him walk and HOPING that Fairley turns it on some day.

If it was baseball just give the check to suh,.....It's not, it's football therefore a cap and cutting bait might be the best choice. It's that simple, sorry to break it to some that think there's endless cash flow for the Lions.

and then you have to consider HUGE cap hits comingup for CJ

2013... cap hit...... 8,773,000.00
2014... cap hit.....13,058,000.00
2015... cap hit.....20,558,000.00
2016... cap hit.....24,008,000.00 with a dead money of 12.914 mil
2017... cap hit.....21,358,000.00 with a dead money of 4.857 mil

What are we going to do next year, EXTEND CJ ? look at the increases

couldn't have said it better...

Love having Suh more than CJ....but not both if Suh gets that 14-15 mil per year and considering future cap hits from CJ..

There isn't an arguement from anyone that you don't have to pay your stars, and nobody is saying that Suh shouldn't be the highest paid DT in the league. He would be that if he signed a deal that averaged $11m/yr, which would actually be a pay cut.

Instead it's been suggested on this board, and now apparently seconded by a former agent, that with no negotiating leverage the Lions will have to pay Suh a contract like that of the highest paid defensive players in the league. That would be $16m/yr.

The Lions have cap problems already and here we are talking about an extension that is a full 50% over the next highest contract at his position? IMO there is absolutely, positively no way he is worth that. If that is number his agent plans to demand then the Lions are absolutely best served to trade him.

If you trade him, it's not like you still don't eat the cap number.

Man, the Lions have to move Suh. Keeping him would be a complete mess and everyone knows it. Any NFL executive should know that no single defensive tackle should command that type of money nor do they impact the game enough to warrant it either. Im sorry, I like Suh but I cant get behind resigning him. Like I said before; I dont even like the enormous contract of CJ

Well if you cut, trade or just let him walk then forget about a super bowl. Teams that go to super bowls have star players! You want the Lions to look like JAX and OAK with NO talent on their teams?

How many $16m/yr players do the Seahawks have? I'm sorry but that pretty much blows up your theory.

We currently have 3 of the top 25 highest paid NFL players. Think about that for a minute. 32 teams in the league and we have 3 of the top 25 contracts on our payroll. And here we are talking about the need to give a huge raise to one of those top contracts?? Really??

It wouldn't be the end of the world. The Lions would just have to make sure they bring in some good players to help build the team. If I knew I could get an extra, starting S, CB, DL, or WR to go along with whatever the pick will be at 10, I would like that. Then, on top of that, they may even get a 3rd or 4th, plus a future pick.

If we didn't have Fairley and Ansah, I dont think I would like it, but those two alone is good.

Lions can't afford him, Maybe Suh can be re-united with Cliff Avril in Seattle, that would be fun to watch.

Does anyone know Suh's cap hit in '15 if he is released after the upcoming season?

I have to get Fuzzy Bunny credit on this one. His position on this right on.
