Kansas City Chiefs (9-0)

--the NFL's only undefeated team

--matched the best start in franchise history

--The first team in NFL history to start 9-0 after posting the worst record in the league in the previous season.

--In the Super Bowl era, 18 teams have started 9-0 and all 18 qualified for the playoffs. Eleven of those 18 clubs advanced to the Super Bowl and seven won the Super Bowl.

--The Chiefs held their ninth consecutive opponent to 17 points or fewer to match an NFL record set by the 1977 Atlanta Falcons.

--The Chiefs held their ninth consecutive opponent to 17 points or fewer to match an NFL record set by the 1977 Atlanta Falcons.

the 1977 Falcons hold the NFL record for least points allowed in a 14 game season.

compare how the Chiefs are doing to...

the 2002 Buccaneers: allowed more than 17 three times in their first 9 games (26, 24, 20), then three more times for the rest of their season (23, 21, 20)

the 2000 Ravens: allowed more than 17 two times in their first 9 games (36, 19), then two more times for the rest of their season (23, 20)

the 1990 Giants: allowed more than 17 three times in their first 9 games (20, 20, 19), then three more times for the rest of their season (31, 21, 19)

the 1985 Bears: allowed more than 17 three times in their first 9 games (28, 24, 19), but then only once for the rest of their season (38)

the 1976 Steelers (Steel Curtain): allowed more than 17 two times in their first 9 games (31, 30, 18), then once more for the rest of their season (24)

the 1975 Rams (Fearsome Foursome): allowed more than 17 two times in their first 9 games (24, 18), then twice more for the rest of their season (37, 23)

the 1973 Dolphins (No Name Defense): allowed more than 17 two times in their first 9 games (23), then once more for the rest of their season (26)

the 1972 Dolphins: allowed more than 17 one time in their first 9 games (23), then twice more for the rest of their season (24, 21)

the 1971 Vikings (Purple People Eaters): allowed more than 17 one time in their first 9 games (23), then three more times for the rest of their season (20, 19, 19)

the 1962 Packers: allowed more than 17 one time in their first 9 games (21), then twice more for the rest of their season (26, 21)

There's a difference between knowing statistics and knowing what statistics mean. You could probably find a statistic that applies to the Chiefs that will say a team with that statistic will miss the playoffs - based on history.

That eleven of eighteen teams that started 9-0 made the Super Bowl does not mean that the Chiefs have a 61% chance of making the Super Bowl. I think you have to look at each NFL season by itself. Sure it helps that they are 9-0 because they have the inside track to homefield advantage and a bye week in the first round of the playoffs, which is huge in boosting a team's chances to make the Super Bowl. However, the Chiefs haven't even played the Broncos yet. I will feel a lot more confident about the Chiefs making the Super Bowl if they beat the Broncos in one of their regular season matchups. If they beat them in both, I will feel really confident.

None of those stats take the quality of opponents into account.

The Chiefs are not for real until they run though the Broncos, Chargers, and Colts. Those are 5 the Chiefs have to face actual football teams.

i wish them the best but I wouldn't be shocked if they didn't make the superbowl. Heck, the team first needs to win a playoff game something they haven't done since 93.

For what its worth this team is not a fluke and Reid should continue to put out a winning product yearly.

I'd say their chances are considerably lower than that considering the record of their opponents are 27-49 (.355). There are no .355 teams in the postseason.

Talk about projection.

Broncos fans like to bang on the Chiefs for their schedule when the reality is the only good team the Broncos themselves have played this year beat Denver and the only average team they played ( Dallas) dropped 48 points on them. Neither team has beaten anyone yet to hear Broncos fans talk youd think their schedule has been some gauntlet of high caliber teams. I guess because their offense is great it means theyre for real but the Chiefs D being great just means the Chiefs offense sucks??? LOL

The Chiefs offense does suck though. They put up 9 points against the Bills. The only redeeming factor is Charles

Fair enough. Doesnt change the fact that both KC and Denver are great on one side of the ball and below average on the other. Doesnt change the fact that neither team has beaten anyone of any high quality this year.

As an FYI the 9 teams the Chiefs have beat have 27 wins or 3 wins per team. The 7 teams the Broncos have beat have 20 wins or an average of slightly less than 3 wins per team. The ONLY difference between the 2 schedules so far is that Denver got beat by Indy. That doesnt mean Denver is great just because they played ( and got beat by ) a good team. If anything its the pot calling the kettle black when they speak of the Chiefs schedule.

Shouldn't we wait until the postseason?

Worthless without margin of error, which is huge. So....worthless.

and the Chiefs' five remaining teams are 34-22 (0.607).

but note that the Broncos’ first eight opponents combined for only 26 wins through week nine. Denver’s second half opponents have 41 wins through week nine

the teams KC played away from Arrowhead so far combined for only 11 wins

the teams Denver played away from Mile High so far combined for only 13 wins

mutual opponent:
Chiefs beat Cowboys 17-16
Broncos beat Cowboys 51-48

Kansas City’s offense has been steady and relatively mistake-free this season, tied for 13th in the 32-team league with an average of 24 points a game and the fourth-fewest turnovers in the NFL.

“The Chiefs are built for cold weather, they’re built for January," Brian Baldinger of NFL Network said.

How does Peyton Manning do in the cold?
