Thoughts on Cam Newton?

Completing 64% this season. 93.1 QB Rating. I think he gets a bad rap because of all the allegations at Auburn. Yea, he acts childish at times, but he gets better better as the time goes. I think he has the potential to be truly amazing. Your thoughts?

he needs to run more i think hes trying to pass too much. when he rushes hes truely special and dangerous. i think he has a body type that is big enough to pull the rushing qb thing off. unlike vick or griffin who are thin and get injured all the time. let him run loose i say.

A ton of QBs have the potential to be truly amazing. I don't think he's going to realize that potential. He's just not extremely efficient & quick / smart in his decision making IMO. Not a lot of young QBs are giving me that indication. Luck & RGIII did, but even RGIII is going to get himself killed the way he plays.

I honestly don't see what Cam Newton brings to the table that Ryan Tannehill & Jake locker don't bring.

Before this year I would agree with this assessment. But making quick and good decisions is where he seems to have improved drastically this year, IMO.

I agree that he needs to run more, but you have to use his arm too. There aren't many QBs with a stronger arm.

Cam has more arm talent, is bigger, and has more rushing ability than both of them. I think that's plain to see.

As a Panther fan I like Cam he has a strong arm and can run and avoid a lot of defenders this is his 3rd year and we are finally getting better.

His decision making needs to get better he will try to put it in some of the smallest windows or over throw a wide open target but overall he is a good QB

He's doing ok this year, though he reverted to bad mechanics yesterday. Overall, I see better accuracy, and discipline going through his reads (a lot less 1 read and tuck). Main thing is we can't put it all on him - Panthers do best with a balanced attack, and we've done well running the ball this year.

Locker: 6'3 223 with a rocket of an arm. Ran a 4.59 at the combine & a 6.77 3-cone drill. Ran a ton in college.

Tannehill: 6'4 221 with a huge arm. Ran a 4.58 40 at A&M (don't remember if he ran at combine) and used to play WR.

Cam: 6'5 248 with a cannon. Ran a 4.59 at the combine & a 6.92 3-cone. Ran a ton in college.

Explain to me how one has such an enormous athletic / running advantage over the others.

It's hard to compare his stats to Locker, because Jake has only played 5/11/6 games so far, which goes to durability. JL is 6'3", 223, Cam 6'5" 245, so a simple principle of physics says he carries more force/load running at the same speed. In his 22 NFL games, JL has 484 yards rushing. Cam had 706 his first year, 741 the next year, and 251 so far this year (to Locker's 137). So the running comparison is just, well, stupid. Again, you can't compare yardage passing, since Locker hasn't played as many games, but his rating last year was 74.0 (Cam: 86), and this year 91 (Cam: 93).

Tannehill is 6'4" and 222, though I think that's a heavy estimate, lol. In his 24 games, he has 294 yds rushing, and 83 this year (1/3 of Cam's) so again the rushing thing is completely off the table. His QB rating last year was 76.1 (Cam: 86), and this year 80.8 (Cam: 93). Last year, Tannehill's TD/INTs were 12/13, this year 11/9 (Cam: 19/12 and 13/7). I admit Tannehill has a cannon arm, but quite often the ball goes to the wrong team.

The subject of the OP was "performance", and Cam has been on top in that department. "Potential" is subjective, but looking at the current year, how you get to saying the guy with the best yds/pass, completion %, and rushing yds (when his team actually counts on him to do it in clutch 3rd down situations), has less potential -> well that just reflects your ability to judge based on the available data (lol).
