two of them were playing their sb against us it means very little my ass. this team shut them down what happens when they play well against a talented offense? not proven still? patriots defense is among the best in the league, wake up and smell the coffee.

No, they weren't. Beating bad teams means nothing more than that we did what we needed to. I would be surprised if the three combine for 20 wins. It means nothing.

I think you're using different notions of the word 'elite'. Some people would say top 5 IS elite, because the standard for elite is "one of the best few defenses this year", while others would say top 5 isn't elite because not even the best defense every year is elite; elite is like the '85 Bears or '00 Ravens.

I would say that it's a moot point: they won't be a top 5 defense after they've played a few more competent offenses. They're the best they've been in years, but they're not elite right now.

Agreed

Wouldn't say the D is elite, but better then we've seen the last few years. If the offense can be high powered we have a good enough D to make a deep run. Once Gronk is back I expect the offense to get a lot better, if Danny can stay healthy.

Elite? This defense needs schemes to succeed and that's not what I think of when I think of elite defenses. They don't have the horses to beat teams by winning the one on one battles IMO.

Schemes are part of the defense.

But we haven't even faced a respectable offense yet, let alone a good one.

Schemes are part of every defense. They have one elite cornerback. They have one elite end and one effective journeyman end. They are getting surprisingly good safety play, and they have an elite LB corps. They have the tools to be a top tier defense, and they've been effective against solid opponents (Atlanta has the 6th ranked offense, NYJ has the 13th, Buffalo has the 16th, so they've played one very good offense and a couple middle-of-the-pack ones).

Schemes are part of every defense? Duh..thanks for the insight. There's a difference between a defense that has to rely on schemes because they don't have dominant players than a team that can beat you rushing four like the Bengals did yesterday...and the Bengals aren't even elite.

The sad part is the Bengals lined up four against five and sometimes six or even seven with a RB to block and still pressured Brady almost at will.

Their scheme was different, but that doesn't make it any more or less legitimate.

If you're rushing 4 it's because you need the help in coverage.

We have one elite end? Who is that? And don't say Jones. He's not close to being that......yet.

You must be joking. Surprising good safety play? Watch Gregory a little closer sometime and you might come to a different conclusion. I know I don't particularly like watching him come up in run support. He looks the part but for some strange reason he seems to take bad angles..why? IMO it's because he doesn't want to make the tackle. He seems to put his head in the pile quite a bit though as the player is on his way down.

The only starting LB that is a legit three down player is Mayo.

IMO...Spikes and Hightower are on this team because Belichick remembers how his defense was getting it's butt kicked on the ground against Manning's Colts when they had Addai.

Spikes and Hightower start for at least 20 teams.
