It makes sense for the Mariners NOT to trade Morales and offer him the one year tender. If another team signs him we get a 1st round pick and if they don't we have a good 3 or 4 hitter for next season which we can then turn around and trade in July if we stink it up. If we trade him, we will still need to go find a 3-4 hitter to fill his spot in the lineup because lets face it Montero isn't the answer.

Unless the M's get back a legit Top 50 prospect back, I see no reason to trade Morales.

I think I'm on the keep Morales wagon as well. I would look to move Morse, Perez, Wilhelmsen and Ryan if there are any takers. Ibanez too if the return is good. It does seem like Raul has had a good impact on the young players so I wouldn't want to see him go for a low level prospect who will never amount to anything.

Can we (Mariners) now start thinking trades? I don't see why we would not look in to offers for Morales, Morse, Perez, Wilhelmsen, Ryan, etc. Of the bunch, Morales is the only one I see as a Type A free agent so getting more value for the others over a sandwich pick shouldn't be too hard. Also, what is the harm in trading Morales since he is a free agent at the end of the year and we will have the same chance as anyone to re-sign him. I know we can offer him the one year deal making it less likely a team signs him because they don't want to forfeit a 1st round pick, I would rather try and sign him to a 3 year deal or let him walk in a trade with something coming back.

And yes, Jack's trade history scares me to death.

I would trade any of those guys if the price was right. I actually don't think the guys mentioned have as much value as we think.

I've never understood this thought process though. If Seattle trades him they for sure will get at least one prospect who is farely close to being able to make a team. If they wait and get the 1st round pick, he will take what 4 years? I'm not advocating trading him, I just don't understand the thinking lets keep him so the M's can get the pick.

Re-read that statement and honestly ask yourself..."Do I REALLY believe that Jack Z could get a team ready prospect for this team?"
Because Smoak, Ruffin, Wells and Montero are doing so well?

SBNation is so stupid. lol.

This person is posting about the M's possibly acquiring Javier Lopez.

Sure, he's be awesome to have in the bullpen, but his contract is up in like 12 minutes. Where do people come up with this stuff?

Now, watch Jack Z do it. LOL.

MLB trade rumor roundup: Mariners looking for offense, Giants' Lopez available - SBNation.com

Where in that article did it say the M's are interested in Lopez? In the article it said the M's are interested in acquiring Kyle Blanks from the Padres for possibly Morales. I don't know where you see the M's actually mentioned in regards to Lopez though. Not trying to be a dick and sorry if I sound like one but am I missing something in the article?

Agreed, but Orioles are looking for a starter, a reliever and a hitter so if we packaged say Saunders/Perez/Morales we should be able to get a guy like Urrutia (sp?) who some say can be the next big thing (I know, if he is the next big thing why we they trade him?).

Instead I read we are looking at the big kid from SD that is hurt (Blanks). Not sure why because he is always hurt.

I think the M's front office should take this series with the Twins as an answer to their question of whether to buy or sell. If our offense and relief pitching cannot get it done against a subpar twins team then we should realize that we are not in win-now mode and maybe package some of our useless pieces (Ibanez, Ryan, Chavez, Perez, Wilhelmson etc.) for some players that we can use going forward in 2014-2015. It's obvious this team is not a playoff caliber team and continuing to kick the can down the road pretending 75-80 wins is good enough is pointless. But then again the Team presidents both said that a world series title is not a goal for this organization(which continues to baffle me why they would say that.)

Yes, Jack hasn't given M's fans any reason to trust his ability when it comes to trading for talent. And I'm not advocating dealing Morales just stating I don't understand the philosophy of not trading Morales just to offer the tender and get a pick for him.

And sorry for the confusion with Hultzen being a "number 3" I personally don't know because I have seen him a few times and he doesn't blow me away. My comment was mostly that I do not believe he is "untouchable" in terms of trading like Walker is.

Also, I read on mlbtr that the Orioles have liked Morse for awhile, could be another option in a trade. I would be cool with adding Urrutia.

I would be pissed if they traded for Blanks I can't see a point to a trade of that nature.

It didn't. I didn't look closely enough at the article. Thanks.

I read that about Morse as well, but forgot until you wrote it. I wouldn't mind having Blanks, but I wouldn't give much up for him. A guy like Triunfel or equivalent would be fine by me, but I read someone said Morales for him in an article and that I wouldn't do.

I guess we will know more in a couple days or so.

If the Mariners traded Morse right now they would get ripped off. His stock is pretty low relative to what (I believe) he would be worth.

I doubt Morse gets traded before the trade deadline. Hell... he may not even play again before the deadline and if he did, that wouldn't leave much time to convince teams around the league that he's healthy and worth trading for at this time. A deal prior to the waiver deadline on August 31st would be a possibility if he comes back by August 1st and absolutely rakes from that point into late August, but even then I wouldn't really expect much.

Morales' limitations in terms of how much he could play first base could shrink his trade market. If only American League teams are interested in trading for him to do what he's done here (mostly DH and some occasional 1st base) this year, then the return the M's could get on him might be limited to how badly a team needs a rental DH. The only thing working in the Mariners' favor with a potential Morales trade is that he's probably one of the bigger names on the trade market this year due to the fact that fewer and fewer superstars are making it to free agency and thus aren't being traded before they hit the market for lots of minor league talent, so his stock might be higher for that reason, but with Boras as his agent and the near certainty of him testing the free agent market rather than signing an extension because of that, it might eliminate any leverage the Mariners might have had despite his status as one of the top guys potential trade commodities.

Raul - Keep...he wants to be here and wants to retire a mariner

Morales - Keep...unless someone wows us with an offer we can't refuse I say keep him...try to resign him in the off season and if that fails we'll get a draft pick as compensation

Morse - Dangle him out there...but I doubt we will get anything of value back with him just coming off an injury

Perez - Trade...try to see what we can get for him...playoff teams are always looking for an arm in the bullpen

Joe Saunders - Dangle him out there...see what we can get for Joe...if no one gives us anything keep him in the rotation for the rest of the year...if they do he is highly expendable...we have plenty of arms waiting to get called up for a chance

Ryan - Trade...if someone is willing to take him and give us anything of decent value in return do the trade

In regards to Blanks, I guess I just don't see what role he would play for the Mariners that I would view as an upgrade from what we already have.

Seriously? He only gets hurt 80% of the time versus Guti getting hurt 95% of the time. I see that as a huge upgrade.
