Two years is interesting, but yeah, it sort of protects both parties there.

Ownership was scared to death of "Steve Mason 2: Electric Boogaloo". They would not go longer under any circumstances, which is what I expect was the sticking point. So Bob asked for more per. Which he didn't get, it seems. Guess Jarmo knew he wanted to be in Columbus and nowhere else...

He gets them into the playoffs this year, I bet they extend him. They won't let this RFA mess happen again.

Exactly...acts sort of like a one year contract. Play well, get an extension and much more money. I'm more impressed that Bob signed it...but he'll get a huge payday if he proves consistency.

This is going to be a difficult week for Gillis. Has a goalie that he has no way of predicting what he's gonna say, a coach who's the same way, he has to face the Vancity media about Schneider (and how Corey found out about the trade), now he can't trade Edler and he might have a new neighbor by the end of the week.

Wonder if there's a fortified bunker he can hide in somewhere.

just to be clear - in no way, shape or form were we pressed to trade Edler before his NTC kicked in.
it was just dangling a rare and attractive asset (young, top pair physical defenseman, with a cannon of a shot on a relatively decent contract) that could have been available. If an offer came that could have restocked our system, then it was worth looking at - but there was no way we had to trade him yesterday, or that not moving him yesterday should be viewed as a failure.

the goalie thing - clusterfuck-and-a-half... but moving Edler was not a necessity.

as for not contacting Schneider beforehand - I give him a potential* pass for that, too.
they have 3 minutes between picks, and the deal was made just before the 9th pick.
there are reporters all over the floor vying for the scoop - before the trade was 'officially announced' (ie. announced by the league, not broken by the press) TSN showed Gillis on the phone, and he was on the phone to Schneider. Even at that, Duthie got a text in to Schneider first.

* this excuse only works on draft day, when the media are mixed in with GMs on the floor

though this may be a fuck-up in the making too.
Acqulini's are so desperate to avoid a buy-out.

@TSNBobMcKenzie 1m
VAN's Keith Ballard is on conventional waivers. Not $100 unconditional waivers, which is necessary for buyout purposes.

How many years does he have left at 4.2 million? Is it two or three?

Bob's deal is official. Just under $6M for 2 years.

just 2 more years.

if someone bites (or they bury him in the minors), we are actually in decent shape on the blueline.

Edler, Garrison, Hamhuis, Bieksa, Tanev, Corrado.
nice mix of old and young with the last two on ELCs
(still so fucking stupid to burn a year of Corrado's deal last year)

Bob supposedly really wanted to stay and the turning point was when Jarmo said he was talking with other (retired) goalies. Bob got scared he was getting kicked out. He and Ian Clark have a good rapport.

Jarmo >>>>>>>> Doug Maclean

In a number of ways.

Mea Culpa. I thought Edler asked to be moved.

I have nothing to worry about unless Curtis Joseph comes to be goalie coach. And even then, he will have to keep his mask on, only exposing his eyes.

Although, that kid is going to be exceptionally popular up by the OSU campus.

Capgeek just said that Bob will still be an RFA after this deal expires? Interesting.

Yeah, this is kind of a probationary thing. He's young and won't meet the requirements of UFA at the end of it.

NHL Free Agents Explained - how the NHL free agent system works

Another reason Jackets wanted two years. Seriously, if he plays as well or better (he said he has much to improve on) than last year, he will get extended next year. No question.

At least your team has a goalie. Mine signed a college UFA. Drafted a kid at Minnesota St. & another headed to Penn St. Right now Kevin Poulin is the Isles starting goalie.
