Pete Carroll's Seattle Seahawks in NFC driver's seat entering bye

By Michael Silver
NFL Media columnist
Published: Nov. 18, 2013 at 12:19 p.m. Updated: Nov. 18, 2013 at 05:19 p.m

The time had come to speak to his players about the task at hand, as Pete Carroll does virtually every Saturday night during the NFL season, but the Seattle Seahawks' relentlessly upbeat coach called an indulgent and understandable audible.

Descending a staircase at the team hotel to find the nearest television set, Carroll took a walk down memory lane: He watched the USC Trojans, a program he rebuilt into a national power before leaving amid a cloud of impending NCAA sanctions, recapture a bit of the old magic by closing out a thrilling upset of No. 4 Stanford.

"I loved it," Carroll said Sunday night, a couple of hours after the Seahawks had rolled to a 41-20 victory over the Minnesota Vikings at CenturyLink Field, improving their NFL-best record to 10-1. "Our meeting started late because I wanted to get to see that guy kick the winning field goal. I was just really excited for Coach (Ed Orgeron) and everyone else. It was awesome."

If ever a coach was going to be forgiven for a delay of game infraction, it was this one on this night. While Seahawks Richard Sherman and Doug Baldwin (who lost a bet to Carroll) might not have been thrilled with their alma mater's defeat, Carroll's enthusiasm sets the tone for the franchise, and his popularity among his players rivals that of Batkid among San Franciscans.

In his fourth season in Seattle, Carroll has assembled an NFL team of his dreams -- a chillingly efficient, potent, unflappable and well-rounded outfit that appears to be nowhere close to peaking. In dispatching the Vikings on Sunday, the Seahawks welcomed back three offensive line starters (center Max Unger and tackles Russell Okung and Breno Giacomini) and rolled out, at long last, their prized offseason acquisition: electrifying playmaker Percy Harvin.

Harvin, acquired last March in a blockbuster trade with the Vikings, underwent hip surgery Aug. 1 and began the season on the physically unable to perform list before returning to practice last month. He only touched the ball twice in his debut, but that was enough to send a resounding message to the NFC's other Super Bowl contenders.

Percy Harvin hints at impact to come in quiet Seahawks debut

SEATTLE -- Percy Harvin's Seahawks debut got off to an inauspicious start. The speedy wideout, who missed the first 10 games while rehabbing from hip surgery, took only one snap on the Seahawks' first offensive series and didn't touch the ball. On their second series he also took only one snap and didn't touch the ball. And on their third series he took two snaps but, yet again, didn't touch the ball.
Then came the flash of brilliance that Seattle fans had been waiting for since the team sent three draft choices, including a 2013 first-rounder, to the Vikings in an offseason trade for the explosive triple threat. Harvin lined up on the inside of a three-receiver set to the right, slipped past press coverage on a crossing route and, despite having cornerback Chris Cook in tight coverage, leaped and made a one-handed catch for 17 yards to extend a drive that would eventually end in a Seahawks touchdown.
Then with 48 seconds to go in the first half and the Seahawks leading his former team by only four, Harvin took a kickoff and returned it 58 yards to the Minnesota 46-yard yard line. Five plays later Russell Wilson found Doug Baldwin in the back right corner of the end zone for a 19-yard score that had the Seahawks well on their way to a 41-20 victory that wasn't as close the final margin.

arvin, who after being acquired signed a potential $67 million extension that includes $25.5 million in guarantees, played only 16 snaps and finished with only the one catch and the one return. However there was no way to walk away without shaking your head at the possibilities he brings to an already talent-laden offense. He played on the wide side of formation, in the slot, in the backfield and as a returner. And though the statistics said his impact was minimal, nothing could be further from reality. Just his presence helped create opportunities for others. Consider:

On his third series he lined up in the right slot on 2nd-and-7 and ran a skinny post. Safety Jamarca Sanford was so concerned about Harvin that he bit on the short route, opening a bigger window down the right sideline for Doug Baldwin, who beat cornerback Xavier Rhodes for a 44-yard gain. On the next play Harvin lined up wide right and ran a drag route to the left. That drew the attention of multiple defenders and helped to free Ricardo Lockette for a 27-yard reception. One play later Lynch scored from the 4.
• On his fourth series he lined up in the right slot and used his speed down the field to draw a pass-interference penalty on cornerback Josh Robinson that would've been good for 50 yards had tackle Russell Okung not been called for holding. Then on the next play he delivered a nice block on the outside to spring Lynch for a 23-yard gain. Three plays later he made the leaping one-handed grab, which led to Lynch's 1-yard touchdown run four plays later.
• On his fifth series he returned the kickoff 58 yards, then with the Vikings in a two-deep coverage, he drew the attention of safety Andrew Sendejo while running a deep seam/post route from the right slot, creating a larger opening for the touchdown throw to Baldwin.
Three possessions, three touchdowns, three instances of Harvin contributing without touching the ball.

Wilson: 'I want to be great one day'

RENTON, Wash. -- After the 41-20 victory over Minnesota Sunday, Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson made this comment:

"Every day, my goal is: 'Can I be better than I was yesterday?'" Wilson said. "That's my mindset and I really think it helps. I want to be great one day."

Psst. Hey Russell, here's a little secret. You already are.

Wilson is a big reason the Seahawks have reached the bye week with a 10-1 record. In fact, it's scary to think where the team would be without him. Wilson does so many things well, but one of his top assets is the fact he's an equal-opportunity passer.

Wilson is going to get the football to the man who can do the most for the offense on that particular play. It makes no difference who that person might be.

"The thing about Russell is that he always finds the open guy," Seattle tight end Zach Miller said Sunday. "He doesn't play favorites. Whoever is open, he's getting it to them. He's such a smart football player and makes such good decisions."

Wilson had 13 completions in 18 throws Sunday, including two touchdowns. Those 13 completions went to eight different receivers.

"That's what we want to do," Wilson said. "We want to make it tough on the defense to figure out who to cover. Now we've added Percy Harvin to the mix. If you don't know who to cover you can't lock down on guys. That's an advantage for our offense. My goal is to facilitate the ball to the right guy and the right time. That's the biggest thing. If it's my first read, second read of third read, just trust it. Trust what I'm seeing."

Even with Harvin finally on the field, the Seahawks aren't going to make one receiver the focus of their offense. That's not what Wilson does and not what the coaches want him to do.

Wilson has completed 176 or 275 passes (64 percent) for 2,362 yards, 19 TDs and only six interceptions. And he did it most of the season with a patchwork offensive line because of injuries, causing him to scramble and improvise more than he wanted. All the starters were back Sunday.

"I think he's right where we want him," Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Sunday of Wilson's play this season. "He's doing everything we want. He's playing great football."

See Russ, even Coach Carroll says so.

Wilson should be in the talks for MVP. Overcoming the injuries on the O-Line, minimal mistakes, escapability allowing plays to be extended. His attitude is more than you could ask for, his work ethic, he's just a likeable guy and I can't say enough good things about him, not only as a player but as a person. I have no doubt he will lead us to our first championship at some point, maybe even this year. I have never had this much confidence in any Seahawks team and I'm 38 and have been watching football since I was 4 or 5 and have always been a Seahawk fan and have never had this feeling of expecting to win every week like I do this year, even when they're down I know were capable of coming back. It's exciting time to be a Seahawk fan. Now I just have to figure out how to finance my trip to the Super Bowl if they go. I went in 2005 and it cost me $4-5 G's total, It will be more expensive this year unless you get lucky with tickets. GO HAWKS!!!

'Beast Quake' aftershocks still felt

Players share memories of Lynch's run as another Saints-Seahawks clash looms

Many of those who were on the field that day swear they remember the ground quaking beneath their feet when Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch went "Beast Mode" on the New Orleans Saints.

And technically, they're not exaggerating. Seismic activity was actually recorded outside the Seahawks' home stadium during Lynch's stunning 67-yard touchdown run that clinched a 41-36 playoff victory over the reigning Super Bowl champions on Jan. 8, 2011.

In truth, it was Seattle's raucous "12th Man" crowd that shook the stands enough to produce those vibrations in the ground. But the way that run is remembered, it's almost as though Lynch was shaking the earth himself with each thunderous step -- like he was Paul Bunyan in football pads -- while he tossed aside a series of Saints defenders on his way into the end zone.

Seahawks aggressive play on defense shows swagger

The New Orleans Saints didn't make a ton of plays offensively Monday night at Seattle. But when they did, Seahawks defenders wasted no time shouting down any celebration.

"It's just the competitiveness of the game," Seahawks strong safety Kam Chancellor told USA TODAY Sports this week. "People are going to do that. If you make a big play, you're going to get up and say your words here and there."

The Seahawks don't want to see it on their home field, though, and tension was high Monday. Linebacker Bobby Wagner even chased and had to be pulled away from Jimmy Graham after the Saints tight end scored a second-quarter touchdown – the visitors' only points in a 34-7 blowout.

That's part of what one high-ranking NFL scout who has studied the Seahawks recently called the team's "intimidating factors," particularly in a secondary flush with big bodies. They lead the league in total defense (284.5 yards per game), pass defense (177.3) and takeaways (27).

"To tell you the truth, man, we just play our ball. And our ball is running and hitting," Chancellor said. "That's just us. We run and hit. We fly around, every man to the ball."

The defense's dominating performance Monday was striking in part because the Seahawks didn't have two of their top three cornerbacks, with Brandon Browner battling a groin injury and Walter Thurmond serving a four-game suspension for violating the substance-abuse policy.

Dan Quinn, hired as coordinator after Gus Bradley left for the head job in Jacksonville, calls an aggressive game predicated on his secondary's ability to match up one-on-one. Chancellor, free safety Earl Thomas and cornerback Richard Sherman all could be headed for the Pro Bowl.

"Most of the time, it's man up," Chancellor said. "We use what God gave us. We're big guys with long arms, aggressive guys, and in DQ's scheme, that's pretty much what it is. It's a lot of man coverage and that's exactly what we do (well)."

There is changing of the guards in the NFL West.

Seahawks' win would mean a changing of the guard - 710sports.com

A victory would allow Seattle to not only clinch the division, but it would do so on the home field of this 49ers team that won the NFC West each of the past two years and reached the Super Bowl last season.
It would constitute a changing of the guard in the division, a passing of the torch. Two years ago the 49ers weren't just a team Seattle wanted to beat, but the team the Seahawks wanted to be, from the unrelenting rushing offense to the unyielding defense.

Power Rankings: No. 1 Seattle Seahawks

In college football, you can’t lose a game and stay No. 1. But the Seattle Seahawks just proved you can in our Power Rankings.

Despite Seattle's 19-17 loss at San Francisco on a field goal in the final seconds, our voters still believe the Seahawks are the top team in the NFL.

Sunday was a game the 49ers had to win to stay in strong playoff contention, playing at home against a division rival. They held serve, barely, but the lead changed hands six times and neither team led by more than six points.

The Seahawks played well, but penalties at key moments killed potential scoring drives.

Seattle and Denver have the best record in the league at 11-2 and appear to be on a collision course for the Super Bowl. The Broncos zoomed past Tennessee in the second half to win 51-28 at Denver on Sunday, but our voters felt the Seahawks' close loss to a much better team made for a better argument in keeping them No. 1.

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks placed backup strong safety Jeron Johnson on injured reserve and re-signed cornerback Perrish Cox on Wednesday.

Johnson sustained a significant hamstring injury Sunday in Seattle's loss at San Francisco. In order to have enough depth in the secondary, Johnson was placed on injured reserve and Cox was re-signed.

Cox was signed by Seattle on Nov. 26 but was released a day later. Cox said being released after a day was due to the Seahawks uncertainty about the status of cornerback Brandon Browner.

Seattle coach Pete Carroll said the plan in the secondary is to have DeShawn Shead work exclusively at safety and have Cox play cornerback. Shead had been working at both positions as a backup.

They are still going to win the division but they didn't get their win last week. Also if Seahawks players aren't worried about the Niners and view them as a glorified practice than they are morons the playoffs are a different beast.

You better not overlook the Eagles, either. 9er fans "assume" the wild card round is a walk in the park.
There's a solid shot they could be your 1st round opponent.

LeSean McCoy is running as well as any back in the NFL right now. DJack is a big play receiver and
Foles is managing games very well and isn't making mistakes.

I don't know how their D is playing as well as it is but they are. I hope you draw Philly if they win
the division and wouldn't be surprised at all if the 9er's got upset.

I'm not overlooking anyone, I'm not just talking about the Niners, if they don't take them seriously they probably don't anyone. I would prefer that the Seahawks stink come playoff time but over confidence will do just fine.

Why many here and elsewhere feel that losing that squeeker in San Fran was a good kick in the ass for the team.

Sure it can, just ask the Niners how they felt after that ass kicking they got in Seattle. I'm sure that was a wake up call to them. So this loss to the Niners should be a wake up call for the Seahawks.
