Our views on shows are just very different it seems.
I don't know...I think it makes for a good story but what more would you have wanted that wasn't in that episode?

I don't think you can say "it was too much" on one hand but then say "they could give us more" in another.

it the constraints of The Last of Us, I thought it told a good story and gave you a different image of the world around them.

and it moved the story forward plenty, IMO

I think they packed a season of things into the one episode that would be well served to completely flesh out over a season.

I never found a wine I really liked until the restaurant I worked for brought in a guy to build our wine collection.
He gave me a wine to try and I never drank anything else to this day ...this was at least 25 years ago.

As soon as I seen the wine they were drinking I knew what it was.....

louis Jadot: Beaujolais Villages.

It's very dry ...and you can get pretty Tuned up on it.

what was the wine they drank last?

must have been one Bill had been saving for a special occasion?

which is weird when you live at the end of the world and you are old

I am waiting for more of the "fuck the wokeness" folks to roll in...
Thats the only reason I'm paying attention.

TLOU1 (2013) wasn't woke. Druckmann did say his goal was to create the most badass non-sexualized female protagonist in gaming. He obviously evolved as a writer during the process but the outrage is part of the design. The show's poster uses the original PS3 Last of Us cover and not the slightly changed ps4 cover and the massively changed ps5 Remake cover. People want the outrage because they want to show that they've won.

Even the original zombie movies were progressive in their time. Walking Dead certainly tried to push diversity. I figure if you're watching zombie movies you're probably left of center.

that's a weird assumption...

I don't ever really think about political leanings when it comes to zombie movies...

why do you think that? because all the survivors aren't straight white men and women?

If they have a decent wine selection ..it should be there. Not hard to find.

Relative to the shows at the time thats certainly part of it. The Romero flicks were partially commentary on capitalism. Roaming around in the mall after you're dead?

I haven't seen episode 2 or 3. But to be fair to the game in accordance with your assessment, they got it right. Joel and Ellie don't really establish a well rounded relationship until after they meet Bill. Up to the point of meeting Bill in the game Joel is still just tolerating Ellie and Ellie is just being her mouthy self with small showings of her own character as being just a kid who knows nothing about the outside. And to your assessment of LGBTQ stuff, if you paid enough attention while playing the game it was obvious Bill was gay in the game, so its no different than in the show for that part. Although, my understanding is they did change up some of the story to give more feels but whatever, that's what shows do to make a 35 hour game into long episodes.

Oh I remember, it just seemed SUUUUUUUUPER stretched out. There was like 45 minutes spent on the whole thing! Yeesh. I just felt given the death of Tess the show really needed some time to focus on Ellie and Joel - and it did a little, but I wanted more of that especially after what happened in episode 2 which ended on that note. It just felt weird to throw in Bill's story in episode 3. Episode 4 or 5? Yah maybe that would've been better.

Like I get it. They're gay. They fall in love with each other. Done and done, 3 minutes... move on... I don't need to watch them make love on a Strawberry patch for fucks sake. I'd have the same reaction if it was a man and woman btw... OKAY WE GOT IT, you love each other, GET THE FUCK ON WITH IT!

BUT, gotta remind myself they gotta get like 3+ seasons out of this thing given the production budget, so yah...

huh, not a super expensive bottle of wine either

Brunellos are not cheap. Hard to know the price without the vintage which of course they weren't going to show though.

I guess I'm not surprised to see that some folks didn't like this episode. I thought it is an early entry of best episode of TV of the year.

If the show is always just a series of "crisis of the week" then it is just the Walking Dead with better production values. If the show is going to reach a broader audience it needs to pull us into the world. Given that the game itself is basically 2 characters and their travails, there aren't many ways to do that without creating secondary stories like this.

Whoever it was that complained about how unbelievable the episode was because Bill was shooting from the middle of the street all I got to say is LMFAO! It's a TV show, sometimes characters have to do things that may not make a ton of sense purely for story telling purposes. Obviously they could have had Bill is a good defensible position and still get shot. They chose this version to add more of a connection between the two.

I agree

they need to flush out more of a story and give more of a background on characters...build the world as well as the characters.

With Bill I also kind of took it, when push comes to shove - how well prepared are doomsdayers for actual gunfights?

IMO, this has always been a big problem with a lot of video game inspired TV/films. They don't do any character development.

This last episode drove home to Joel that his job is to protect people and that with Tess gone, he needs to protect Ellie.

you guys are not disappointing me with your responses to that episode. Keep up the good work being closeminded and shitty

it was a good episode, IMO. It told a good story, albeit not so much about the main characters. I thought they did a really good job with it.

I'm not one to site here and tell you the story from the video game was some masterpiece like some will.

However, Bill's backstory from the game was MUCH more in tune with the universe and actually made sense.

He was still gay, but his boyfriend/husband or whatever was only in the story as a corpse. They lived together for 20 years and eventually got fed up with each other to the point that Frank left, got infected, and then killed himself. This all unfolds to the player as they actually meet Bill and then find Frank's corpse which is right next to a note from Frank basically saying how much he grew to hates Bill's guts. I think the player can choose whether or not to give the letter to Bill.

Either way, that story has some bite to it. It's realistic that two people living together for 20 years with minimal other human interaction would end up like that. THAT story was actually sad.

What we got though? That was some Hallmark channel, easy to digest, autistic Tumblr fan fiction story for teenage girls that made zero sense and could have been skipped entirely.

@Sharkonabicycle nailed it. This was the first episode with Joel and Ellie. This was the time to really establish this relationship and move that part of the story forward. But nah, of course not.
