unnar Henderson went 42nd overall in the 2019 Draft and quickly developed into one of the best young players in the big leagues. Scouts see a lot of similarities between Henderson and Pratt, who finished the showcase circuit as one of the top performers at the World Wood Bat Association World Series in

He can't blame ownership for 2 reasons...1) They pay his salary
2) If he bad mouths the ownership no other team will think of hiring if he's a free agent GM.

If this is his own doing then he gets 1 year for this team to make a serious run in the playoffs. Meaning get to the ALCS cause anything short when just a few pieces was needed is a fireable offense.
They pay his salary, but they're not going to fire him with the momentum behind the team right now. Him making some comment along the lines of "this is the budget that I've been given to work with," isn't an egregious enough statement to put him in hot water with ownership.

You can say whatever the hell you want when you're producing.

gake gelof..3B..virginia

Scouting grades: Hit: 50 | Power: 60 | Run: 40 | Arm: 55 | Field: 50 | Overall: 50..

of needs advice from anyone about how to handle going from the University of Virginia to the pro game, he can ask his older brother Zack, a 2021 second-round pick and a top prospect of the A’s. The younger Gelof broke out in 2022 with a 1.241 OPS, 21 homers and a team-record 81 RBIs. He played briefly on the Cape and tried out for the U.S. Collegiate National Team over the summer and heads into the spring hoping to continue building his case as one of the top power bats in the college game.

A right-handed-hitting corner infielder, Gelof does not get cheated at the plate. He has an aggressive approach, looking to do damage and tap into his huge raw power, especially to the pull side. Gelof takes big swings, but he showed an ability to get to his power in 2022, limit strikeouts, draw walks and make adjustments, even if some think he’ll be power-over-hit when all is said and done.

thats it for now

my top..2024..pick....

9. Braden Montgomery
Right Field, Stanford

Montgomery has been a stud prospect since his high school days, but signing a player away from a Stanford commitment always proves difficult. A two-way guy, Montgomery likely best projects as a prototype right fielder with easy plus power and solid average athleticism both on the base paths and in the field. He'll need to cut his significant swing-and-miss rates before the 2024 July draft if he's to reach his potential Top 5 pick ceiling. Montgomery might have the best outfield arm in the class, a true double-plus cannon with pinpoint accuracy. On the mound, Montgomery has struggled to command the fastball, but he's been up to 97 with a formidable cutter and a swing-and-miss breaking ball when he's in the zone.

one more..2024..

192B

Travis Bazzana

Oregon State
Travis Bazzana has been receiving Chase Utley comparisons longer than we can remember. It's a quick, compact stroke from the left side with significant strength and raw power, and he's tapping into it already. Bazzana was a star in the Pac-12 immediately as a true freshman. The Aussie has twitch and bounce on the dirt with an average arm and enough athleticism to make the plays to his right. He projects a potential solid average, potentially above average hitter with average power at the next level playing a steady second base.

I totally agree that he cannot openly say anything about ownership nor would I expect him too.

My issue with Jerry is he says alot of stuff that he doesnt need to like this.
View attachment 317600

If you are gonna say something like that it should be backed up and it clearly hasnt. Now we are being fed bs about the 2026 payroll.

Too often Jerry just throws a bunch of word salads out and they just end up being checks that arent cashed.

Again just say nothing or less if this is gonna be the end results. I'd prefer just dumb cliches at this point.
Say nothing at all. Just say the organization had a great season and look forward to next year. Like I said, this statement is a fireable offense if this team fails to even compete against Houston or flat out misses the playoffs.

He doesn’t have to openly throw ownership under the bus. Just keep using the word we.

I don’t think that is necessarily true that Jerry couldn’t get another job. He was toxic and was a really really bad GM when the Mariners hired him.

But issue if ownership isn’t willing to spend money on FA I highly doubt they are going fire all of the decision makers for baseball now with Hollander being the new GM and Jerry as baseball president or whatever his official title. Cause that is a shit load of money they’d have to pay to fire then plus hiring an entire new crew.
You can only use the word "we" so many times until the bottom falls out. Then it becomes a "me" thing.

When you say you have incredible spending power, that too me means the checkbook is open yet here we are watching top talent go to other organizations to make them stronger contenders for a WS run.

I know I'm responding to my own post here, but I read this in The Athletic mailbag and honestly if the money is there this is the only explanation:

Regardless of whether you think the front office has done enough to improve the team or not, it’s remarkable and astounding that Nori Aoki remains the most expensive free-agent hitter they’ve signed (under Jerry Dipoto). Do you think it comes down to park/travel factors in getting hitters to sign here? We know they’ve tried, but clearly don’t place the same value on that particular area of the market, as it’s a huge outlier on their résumés. I’m aware it’s a balance between trades and free agents, but in my opinion it’s gotten to the point of holding us back, as evidenced the last two years. — Jonathan K.

It’s a good question, Jonathan. It is remarkable they haven’t done more in terms of free-agent hitters — and even just on mid-range deals in terms of years and dollars. We know they have their preferred means of doing business. I get that. But you’re right: You’re eliminating a segment of players by doing this. Maybe it’s not wanting to get stuck with long-term contracts? I think some hitters look at Seattle (and the park factors their agents present to them) and cringe. T-Mobile Park was third in 2022 in park factors in terms of the toughest place to score runs. Maybe some of these players aren’t interested in flying more miles than any other team in baseball. Tons of variables to consider here. Maybe the Mariners been told “no” so much that they’ve shifted more to the trade market.

When you look at it through this lens, I guess it might make a bit more sense why we haven't been able to land any one year deals for vets/players looking to reclaim their value. But the fact that Seattle was never even rumored to be connected to any of those guys is concerning.
Eh, the flying and park is really just BS. They don’t fly commercial, any free agent they would get will get either a rental house or an apartment. An agents job is to make their client the most money regardless and he has an monetary and professional incentive. Scott Boras is the top agent in sports, I don’t think their is a question about it. You can’t try to be number 2 if you don’t follow any of his philosophies. If a player is going to take less you will hear it blasted all over that it is a hometown discount or he really want to play for X, or wanted to be close to home.

There may be a combo of reasons they haven’t made a splash but a huge part of the equation is the front office not wanting to open up their checkbook.

For all of my frustration with our inability to find and/or develop hitters, we do have to give the organization a lot of credit for how well they've scouted/developed both starting pitchers and bullpen arms. As much as I don't want to give Dipoto credit for that, they've done a great job at it and I don't think it's entirely due to pitching in T-Mobile park.

Random but am I the only one who still calls T-Mobile Park "Safeco Field" and Lumen Field "Qwest Field"? I guess this must just be me starting to get old.
I still call it Safeco but I still called Lumen Seahawks stadium. TMobile doesn’t really have a ring and I hated when people who say we’re going to the “Clink”.

Jerry, his FO and all of those people plus Jack Z and Bavasi should all get credit. But as a fan I am sick of the few seasons the Mariners almost made the playoffs or this one where the Astros skunked them, it is always they need 1 or 2 hitters. It doesn’t need to be like game 2 against the Blue Jays good all year but it would be nice not getting down 4 and wanting to turn it off because you have no hope. Granted I know that last sentence doesn’t make sense because they won game 2.

Damn you are committed to Qwest if you are still calling it that. I at least will still call it the "CLINK" for Century Link. And yeah i am not a huge fan to T-Moblie

It should be Dave Neihaus field but the mariners ownership would rather it have some lame ass corporate name so they can make a little more money that they wont use on the team.

As @wazzu31 pointed out, for whatever odd reason we've been able to find scrubs and get strong performances out of them. I think that's why I'm not as concerned about the bullpen going into 2023.
But you are looking athwart they did during most the regular seasons. They have all died at the end of the seasons and in the playoffs they were unrecognizable. That is the true difference between a transformed scrub and a stud. Late season performances including playoffs.

He tried for him when SF signed him. Dipoto always circles back.
