Not because Gabbert is better, just because he played good soldier. The guy is a walking example of how a top draft pick can stay around, learn a playbook and skate by on equity. Hell, Bortles was on a couple of teams last year.

I'm pretty sure he was benched because the Niners knew they were going to cut him and didn't want to risk him getting hurt which would have prevented them from cutting him and getting out of the contract. Kapernick ended up opting out but that was after the Niners let him know they were definitely going to cut him. The Niners also may have been tanking along with wanting very badly to get out of the contract

Their best receiver? Was Jeremy Kerley....who? Quinton Patton was their 2nd best......another below average player. Torrey Smith was the name player but a shell of his former self.

The defense was the worst in the NFL in allowing points....it wasn't like that was a good team at all.

I think he could have jumped around as a backup if he kept working. Assholes like Gabbert are still around holding clipboards.

The problem with Kaep is the same issues and reason Vince Young was never a backup.

You want a backup QB that can come in, understand the offense and run it. Kaep couldn't run an offense. He simply couldn't read a defense and would drop back and just pat the football or take off. Everything with him was playground football. That isn't what you want from a backup.

Bombshell for everyone in case they don't know: Kaep isnt going to be on an NFL roster this year either. This was just a dog and pony show by the Raiders. They already have their backups in place. He might get a training camp invite by some team wanting to win favor with a certain crowd. But he is really unlikely to win a roster spot. He wasn't good 4 years ago. And sitting around not playing football isn't going to improve the reasons he wasn't good 4 years ago.

Backup QBs have to be able to learn the playbook, put in the work, help the starter, and otherwise be invisible. Backup Qbs that are/become a distraction won't be in the league very long.

How often do you see some guy come out of nowhere, make a deep playoff run and then fade into obscurity? What happens is that every DC in the league looks at film all summer, and when this guy pops up the next season, his tricks have been seen, his cover is blown and he's toast.

Remember Tebow? He took the Broncos to the playoffs and even beat the Steelers in the first round. Then, Denver went to New England. Belichick sent out the third-and-short jumbo package and Denver couldn't move them. A couple of years later, Tebow actually was in NE training camp. He was released, of course, but on the way out he thanked the team and the coaching staff for giving him another chance. Contrast his gracious demeanor to Kaepernick's.

Carr was pretty solid last year in a pretty hectic situation with Gruden getting canned. He's also in the last year of what turned out to be a reasonable contract.
