I think that three or four teams will be all over BB for #21. He won't be shy in letting them know what the best deal is and
if they can come up with something better, so be it.
One consideration in trading down from the #21 is the cost consideration for 1st and 2nd round contracts.
You can get two rookies at round 2 or one at round 1 for same price. Big difference

Typically, you expect an impact player in 1st 15 picks but you might get 1 of the two 2nd rounders to be an immediate impact and the other to be a starter, maybe even 1st year.

Once you get past top 15 picks, usually the 2nd rounders are as safe as the bottom 15.

1st round should be dived as rd1A and rd1B

Agreed it's very likely the guy you select at 21 may be no more useful or skillful as the guy you take at 54 and you do not incur the cost of a top 15 guy. Couple this with your top 15 are normally QB, OT and WR if there are not great needs there trading down makes sense

This study sheds some light and is worthy of reading carefully.

-project-draft-classes/ar-AAW8jCE

"This overview potentially has implications for draft strategies at this point. If the goal of the draft is to acquire starters, then most years produce at least 60-70 chances to find starter-level players. Trading down and accumulating additional chances increases the chances of acquiring more players to suit up in games as role-players and more starters. However, if the goal of the draft is to acquire impact players or stars, then the strategy of trading down possibly leaves a very narrow margin. In a weak year such as 2013 or 2015, there might not be enough high-potential players to make this approach work."

So Oak would have to trade up. This could be a "Hey Josh Screw You Moment by BB", although I suspect BB hold no ill will toward Josh.
If he was 3 inches taller he'd be #1 CB off the board. His coverage is amazing, He could be designated cover for Tyreek Hill 2 games per season.

He will be the best returner in NFL.

I love the guy but we won't take him in the 3rd.
He is on everybody's radar in the 4th
Depends in round three is you have a team need you grab the guy especially if you have multiple picks in that round. You can't always draft best player available.

"A switch to offense at the next level seems in the cards for Jones who should thrive on designated touches. However, CFB’s current leader in every major return category, Jones’ versatility will be a highly sought-after commodity leading up to the spring. An athlete with the capability to flip a game on its side in the blink of an eye, Jones’ speed, vision in the open field, and potential unlimited ambidexterity have begun to shine the spotlight on one of the country’s most explosive weapons."

I predicted a long time ago that Marcus won't make it out of round 3. I just can't see the Patriots being in on him in 3rd

Returner, though still important aren't valued like they once were IMO based on all the rule changes and the improvement and strength of most punters.

No earlier than 4th.

Alontae Taylor, Tennessee (CB)

Take him as a corner and he can switch to safety, ala Devin McCourty.. Get him in the 4th round?

There are at least 8 WR's rated in the 1st or 2nd round. I predict they are not all picked.
The lowest ranked of the 8 is

Jahan Dotson Could he fall to the 3rd?

3 days to go until draft.
We have been fed an endless supply of articles reporting who the Patriots want to draft - only to read about the reporters opinions.
I have opinions also. Neither I nor the reporters really know what the Patriots have done in 3 years of studying these players.
Therefore they are all talking shit! That will change in less than a week to what they should have done - after 3 years of extensive study!
The below report you'll find interesting reading, while you're wading through the rest of this week's bullshit!

Who are the Patriots looking to draft? Here are the top prospects connected to the Pats.

It's always a guessing game. I feel the media and to a degree ourselves don't fully account for somethings that factor in, things GMs think about that we don't. We and the media tend to focus on what we see as glaring needs.

Factors Potentially Not Considered.

1. Who is in the wings at position of need? How many younger players previously drafted are in the developmental stage and perhaps ready for the call to step up.

2. How does drafting any one player at position of need effect current and future caps? CBs QBs WRs and OT are generally big contract hits.

3. Depth: What is the depth at a current position. We may have some great starters but when they off the field resting for a series or a couple of downs what caliber of depth player is filling that temporary role?

4. Ceiling: When are we willing to pull the trigger on a kid who may lack some exp but has a very very high ceiling, is a kid with a high football IQ and high ceiling projected to go in round early round six worth considering late in the 4th if we lack picks later in the draft.

5. I think some consider this and some do not, caliber of competiion. A kid can look great at Slippery Rock or Southern New Hampshire University but how does that prepare him for the next level.

The media more that us tends to lean toward the glamour shots. the mock you presented shied away from that to a degree so I find it really intriguing

Very well said!

Add to this list personal bias from media or me! They like their ideas and I like mine!!!!!

There seems to be a concensus starting that the Patriots will not be using #21.

There are three different scenarios:
Packers will give up #28 and a 3rd for it.
Cowboys will give up #24 and #88 and #164
Bears will give #39, #48 and #150

If the Bears are giving up two number two and the fourth, I think that would be a great trade. Having 39,48,54 could be a huge plus. Then again, Bill might be able to turn #39 into a 2023 first round pick and a fourth or fifth or both in 2022.

It's all probably somebody's pipe dream, but Bill has never been shy about trading out of the first round.

How many players out of top 32 ranks would bill use on #21?
Of the players that might be available?
Maybe Trent McDuffie will be there but after the top 3 there are plenty of good prospects available at CB and more......
