100% agree with this.
Especially in light of such a high scoring game that so obviously favored both offenses over both defenses.

And yes, I felt the Falcons deserved a shot in the Super Bowl as well.
Agreed.

The simple way do the overtime is oin flip to see who gets the ball first and then play a full 15 minute quarter.

If the game is tied after the OT period, then play from 20 yards away from the goal line. Four downs to score by TD or Fg and continue until one team fails to score or doesn't score a tie or a win.

Whatever the rules are I'm fine with. Change them, okay the rules will be the rules. But no losing team in the history of the Super Bowl had a better chance to win than the Falcons. The only thing the Falcons deserve is the regrets they carry. Shame, of course not because it's only a game. both teams are playing, etc... But they fully deserve that regret without watering down that outcome by saying "If only they got another chance".

So, because of a few mistakes made late in the game they were less deserving then the team that made mistakes early in the game...???

Sure. That makes perfect5 sense now.

Did you miss this part: But no losing team in the history of the Super Bowl had a better chance to win than the Falcons?

I'm consistent though... I didn't think the Pats deserved a shot to beat Dallas. They needed to win it outright to deserve the win.

Tony Kornheiser on Pardon the Interruption echoed my sentiment in a rant. That doesn't make me more right than you, but demonstrates that plenty of others (including @sharkymcwrath agree with the "either win it in regulation or shut up" perspective.

Right up until they lost the coin toss.
Or did you overlook that?
Win it in regulation, or lose it by coin flip.

Tony Kornholer is nothing but a talking head. Plenty of other feel it is wrong.

It’s a small sample size, but seven out of the 11 playoff games that went into overtime (under the current rules) didn’t give the loser of the coin toss a chance to touch the ball. There are valid arguments for and against changing the overtime rules again, especially for the playoffs.

They lost the coin flip, it was out of their control, then they failed to stop the Patriots, which was well within their control, as it was the entire game. In the fourth alone they just needed to Stop the patriots, or pickup a blitz, or run a couple times instead of getting sacked. then holding... The Falcons lost the game on their own. At least for the Patriots part, they executed flawlessly when it mattered most.

And yes, later in games does matter more and always has... Maybe it's that clutch label or the drama being thicker, but it's real. There's a reason Brady is saluted for his part of the greatest SB comeback and not being criticized for letting the hole get that deep in the first place.

Also, you are wrong about Kornheiser... The one thing I like about him (and his co-host Michael Wilbon) is he's not just a talking head. He's not. I would NEVER throw out there that my opinion matches Stephen A, Shannon, almost anyone within the Boston sports media, etc....

Such a veiled swipe at his entire team....

“We can just execute better and that starts with me and goes all the way down”

No shit it starts with you. There's no need to add in "and goes all the way down" unless you told the kicker "don't go boot it to Mars"...

I've said it before and will continue to say it. Sean McDermott cannot shift gears. He cannot drive a standard, only an automatic.

Even my wife was screaming to squib kick it and burn up 8-10 seconds. Worse, McDermott had a four man rush and played a Cover 2.
At the very least he should have doubled up on both Hill and Kelce. Mahomes couldn't scramble and would have HAD to throw to McKinnon or Hardman underneath short an they would have had to stay in bounds to pick up yards needed which would have burned up the clock.

McDermott stayed with his standard defense and ended up eating a shit sandwhich. As long as he's the HC, the Bill will not be a challeneger for the Lombardi.

Yes, they lost the coin flip. Yes, it was out of their control. And it is asinine to have the game decided by the coin flip. Sunday, both defenses were gassed, they were spent. The 4th quarter was very back and fourth. That gives the coin toss winner a decided advantage. No team should have an advantage given to them by something they cannot control.
Kicking into the wind? Direction changes each quarter. Home field advantage? Teams are allowed to inspect the field prior to the game for cleat selection etc. The NFL has for years done everything to create parity with salary cap and revenue sharing. It does not matter the team, Patriots/Falcons, Chiefs/Bills, hell, the Patriots/Chiefs in 2019, or the score, or who scored how much at which point in the game. The team "Lucky" enough to win the coin toss has a decided advantage and an advantage should be from drafting, practicing, conditioning, coaching or play calling. Things teams can control. Not a coin toss.
Yeah, the Pats executed when it mattered most. When they had that advantage.
If only one team is allowed the opportunity to score, then the other team is handicapped, which is not parity.

I'm glad for you that Tony says all the things that you agree with in such a way that you feel he's more trustworthy.
He's paid to talk. He's a talking head. As is Edelman, Bruschi, Moss, Dan Patrick, Howard Stern, Steven Colbert, Heidi Klum...

You think overtime should begin with a clean slate. I think each team accepted the risk/benefit of the coin flip by not doing enough to win the game. I don't think either us will be swayed differently.

IMO Tony does not say all the things I like. He says things that are true to him, and whether I like what he says or not, I respect it.

One prominent voice speaking out against them is Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

“I think the best part of the football game is the end of the game — whether you take your timeouts, how you manage the game, the last two minutes, getting the ball back, trying to keep the ball away from the other team, whatever it is,” Belichick said back in 2012. “I think that combines all the elements of football.”

Belichick reportedly favors a plan that adds another half-quarter to the game: a tied contest would continue for seven minutes and 30 seconds, without sudden death; whoever leads at the end of the extra period is the winner.

Even after sudden death won him the Super Bowl against the Falcons and the AFC Championship against the Chiefs, which led to winning the Super Bowl over the Rams, Bill prefers a rule change.

He is not a talking head, he is someone intimately involved.

The coin flip doesn't decide who wins or loses. If you have to go out on defense you simply need to prevent a TD to give your team a chance to go down and score a TD for the win.

The Bills could've help KC to a FG and then marched down the field for a TD and the win. But they didn't.

In my opinion, the coin flip adds some intrigue to OT and I personally would not want to change the current OT rules though I'm likely in the minority and the rules will likely change.

I'm fine with that too. My comments have been mostly toward anyone whining about their team losing. I'm okay if the rules change. The team winning the flip still has an advantage but less than the current rule.

No, the coin flip does not decide the winner.
But for years the NFL has been moving towards being pro offense. They want the sexy deep passes.
This gives a clear advantage to the team that wins the flip.
