What a bummer. And so ends the greatest stretch in San Francisco Giants history

Great ball player. One of my favorites to watch growing up. Hope he enjoys retirement.

Hmmm.

Virtually identical stats to my avatar, and he's not in.
Posey should be required to complete a few successful flights to get in.

too soon?

Seriously though

WAR Posey 44.9 Munson 46.1

They both won ROY and 1 MVP

Posey won 1 gold glove, Munson won 3

Posey won 3 world series, Munson won 2

Posey slashed .252/.321/.345 in the postseason, Munson .357/.378/.496

Munson was one of my favorite players. Unfortunately he played for the Yankees.

Yeah in my mind they were extremely close. I figure both of them would be a lock if they just hung around and put up decent numbers at first base for a few years to compile another few hundred hits. It kind of depends on the mood of the voters I guess. They've let in guys with shorter careers before (Kiner and Koufax). I guess we'll find out. If Posey gets in it may somehow help Munson's cause in the veteran's committee if he is still eligible.

I feel like a hall that has Kirby Puckett and Harold Baines in it will find a place for Buster Posey, and yes Thurman deserves a look from the veterans committee.

One of my favorite stats is WAR7.

Posey = 36.7
Munson = 37.1

Yeah. Offensively, they are practically the exact same player.

What was Munson’s defense like?

From a story on his HOF chances with the vet committee:

Munson excelled on defense, always a catcher’s top priority. He won three Gold Glove Awards -- in 1971 he committed one error in 615 chances -- and threw out 44% of baserunners who tried to steal on him in the postseason.

I think what hurt Munson the most was he played in something of a golden age for catchers. Fisk, Simmons, Carter, Porter, Boone, and probably the best there ever was Bench. Hard to get noticed when those guys are your contemporaries.

All you need to mention is Bench and Fisk as contemporaries. Those two are arguably the greatest 2 catchers in the history of the game.

And honestly, looking at the contemporary context is HUGE, imho. Posey had 1 contemporary to contend with (Molina). Much easier to stand out in that environment.

There's only 14 catchers in the Hall and Posey I believe would be 4th on the list in WAR (or maybe OPS). He and Thurman both deserve it.
I think you can't judge catchers by the normal standards by which you would another every day player at other positions. Catcher has a unique set of skills and requirements. Its tough to judge them.
I'm not sure if everyone understands what Posey meant to the Giants like we Giants fans do. Heck, there are probably a bunch of people on the east coast who never saw him play because they were already asleep by the time the Giants played and will look at his stats and wonder what all the fuss was about.

I don't put Posey in the same class as Bench. Bench was the gold standard for catchers both offensively and defensively. But I would buy the argument that he meant more to those Giants teams he played on than Bench did to the Reds teams he played on.
