I don't put Posey in the same class as Bench. Bench was the gold standard for catchers both offensively and defensively. But I would buy the argument that he meant more to those Giants teams he played on than Bench did to the Reds teams he played on.
100% agree. I was not implying in any way that Posey belongs in the same convo as Bench (or Fisk, as I consider the two of them the best ever by a mile…. Not counting Gibson, of course).

As for the importance of Posey vs the importance of Bench, that is hard to judge. Those Reds teams were stacked with HOFers, while the Giants only had a bunch of HOVGers.

That's what I meant about Posey probably being more important because the Reds had, Joe Morgan, Pete Rose, Tony Perez, George Foster, Ken Griffey, Bobby Tolan, Dave Concepcion, etc. They could have won without Bench but the Giants could not have won without Posey; at least not three times.
Don't remember two much about Berra but I think he was MVP three times in his career.
What is a "HOVGer"?

Hmmm.

Virtually identical stats to my avatar, and he's not in.
I agree. Buster may get in, but I think he needed a couple more seasons to be a shoe-in.

The nerds at 538 weigh in

A good one from Jay Jaffe at fangraphs., I didn't realize that no position player since 1960 has been inducted with less than 2000 hits. Jaffe thinks Posey will be the first.

I feel like a hall that has Kirby Puckett and Harold Baines in it will find a place for Buster Posey, and yes Thurman deserves a look from the veterans committee.

Kirby Puckett isn't HOF in your eyes?

He defines clutch and was one of the fastest players to 2000 hits. I would say guys like Bert Blyleven, Jack Morris and Alan Trammell are all more borderline than Puckett is.

He is. And so is Posey is my point. And yes those other borderline guys are no more deserving than Posey.

Can't even compare anyone to Josh Gibson. He's almost like a mythical figure.

Gonna miss Cueto...what an entertaining player

Who was that wearing no.22? I can't believe that Will Clark's jersey number hasn't been retired by the team.

Exactly. All we really know about him are legendary tales and estimated numbers. No way to know what is true about him.

Clark will get his number retired next season. It was supposed to be retired in ‘20, but…

Lots of players have worn 22 since Clark, though. Whiteside, McCutchen, Matheny, Peavy, just to name a few.

I'm actually pretty bad with knowing jersey numbers except for a few (Mays 24, Bonds 25, Jerry Rice 80, Montana 16, Young 8, Lott 42, Roger Craig 33). I don't know what triggered me to remember that Clark wore 22 when I was watching that video. Being an '80s kid, Will was my first favorite baseball player. If you asked me what Posey's jersey number was, I couldn't tell you. I don't think I can correctly state any current Warriors jersey numbers except for Draymond no. 23. I'm not sure why I've noticed and remembered his, but not others.

In my defense, when watching Giants games, we are always almost looking at Posey's front side of his body, not his back.
