I think it was mostly Fleck playing too conservative figuring they'd pull it off in the end like they have many times before and getting bit in the ass

How about Minnesota to the MWC?
It'd would be a tempting invite, I mean the thought of trips to Hawaii and Vegas and Cali, for away games would increase the # of Gophers flying out to watch away games, lol. But I'm afraid UMn's near the very top of the list of schools the B1G would NEVER EVER EVER let go. If the B1G was shrunk down to a 6 team conf and only allowed to keep 6 schools, Minnesota would absolutely be one of them.

How many Conf Titles has WSU won? more than a handful?
WSU has won more conference championships than Minnesota has in my lifetime. As pitiful as my school is, we have played in a 2 New Year’s Day football games and made it to the Sweet 16 twice compared to Minnesota’s? Hockey is cool and all but Women’s basketball brings in more relevant

Yes because we all know how well those Gophers travel. There were like 15 at the Holiday Bowl we filled up to watch a broken wristed Luke Falk lose to you schmucks.

Minnesotans are spoiled from having SO MANY entertainment options, and so they get picky when it comes to where they spend their money, and a trip to the "Holiday Bowl" to watch the Gophers play a nobody like Washington St just didn't rank high on their list. But we all know how little WSU fans have to look forward to in life, so a trip to any cfb bowl game probably seems like the highlight for any Eastern Washingtonian, lol.

I grew up watching Gopher greats doing amazing things, your going to have to come up with more than a couple Conf Titles and Sweet 16 trips to impress me.

UMn was pulling in the most fans in the country at least one season, to their college basketball games under Musselman, and averaged Top 5 probably every season he was the coach, and one of those teams had 5 future NBAers on it, including a #1 overall pick. Herb Brooks and former Gopher teammate Badger Bob Johnson was taking turns winning Natl Titles all throughout the 70s while Bud Grant with several former Gophers on his Vikings teams were winning most of the NFC Central Div titles of the 70s, and Jerry Kindall was leading Arizona to 3 CWS Titles in the 70s and 80s. UMDer Malosky was becoming the winningest coach in Div 2 cfb in the 80s and Mychal Thompson for the Lakers and Kevin McHale for the Celtics were taking turns winning Titles with their teams and Dave Winfield and Paul Molitor were among the many Gophers doing well in MLB in the 80s and 90s. Flip Saunders was winning CBA titles, Brooks of course pulled off the Miracle on Ice while Johnson became the first American to coach an NHL team to a Stanley Cup Title in 91 before dying tragically before the next season started. Brooks died tragically as well, but not before leading the US to a Silver Medal on top of the Gold he got them in 1980. Doug Woog was recruiting only Minnesotans to the Gopher hockey program and got them to 4 straight Frozen Fours during my 4 years in the military, and a new Gopher Wr coach was starting to make noise on the natl scene. They scored some upsets over #1 ranked teams but lost 1-2 top wrestlers to injury before the Conf tourney and another 1-2 before the NCAA tourney and had a disappointing finish, but a few years later he had them on a great run which included being the only team in history to have all 10 wrestlers garner All-American honors.

I grew up watching Hall of Famers performing every week during the fall and the winter and even during the spring. I rode in an elevator with Randy Breuer just before he led his team to a State Title against my home town team. My school's team is the only team that ever had a lead against his team at half time. A few years later I caddied for a North Star with a Minnesota Kicks player in the foresome as well. I got a ton of autographs that day, but have never asked for an autograph since that day. A UMDer led Notre Dame to a Natl Title in 77 and can remember that time period every time I watch the movie Rudy. A few years later I played a round of golf with Tom Lehman, the #1 ranked player in the world in 1996, at least a dozen years after I played with him. Beat him on a few holes, too. A few years later my girlfriend took me to a party where I met a future Ms. America. My girlfriend was better looking. I got to see the Suburbs open for The Replacements at First Avenue, not long after the movie Purple Rain came out. I enjoyed how much Minnesota music was being appreciated during the 80s and into the 90s. While in the Army I met Wendy & Lisa after one of their shows at a club in Germany. I missed the Prince show I'd plan to go to, though. I told a sports vendor the Gophers were going to be good in 89, before the season started. He had to special order me a Gopher hat as he didn't have any. I was the first person who ever asked for one. He was surprised with how right I was as by the time my hat came in, they had just beat #1 Illinois and he said he started getting other requests for Gopher hats. After I transferred back to America, I got to go to the Elite 8 game vs Georgia Tech that the Gophers could have won had the last second 3 point shot gone in. They missed the Final Four that year but got there in 1997. I made good money that month betting against dumb arrogant Pac 10 fans out in Issaquah and Seattle Washington. I started finding several good books about Gopher football and other sports, too, about this time. And that Final Four just kicked the next 2 decades into high gear and it wasn't long after that FF that the Gopher athletic dept started killing it in multiple sports. UMn got in a new President who seemed to inspire the whole school to take things to a higher level and it was he who brought in Glen Mason and when talk of upgrading the football situation started up seriously. I finally got to see a return of at least some big football wins during up years, but most importantly a new stadium and a hot new coach and a new practice facility, and now raised expectations. I came one meet shy of lettering in Varsity Golf in 6th grade, so I was very pleased when the Gopher Golf team broke some NCAA record in their comeback from almost being eliminated to winning the Title in 2002. I also enjoyed calling UMn Back2BackU after first the Wrestling team, then the Men's Hockey team, then the Women's hockey team, along with the Dance Team, all pulled off Back2Back Titles, the Wrestling team in 01 & 02, the men's hockey team in 02 & 03, the women's hockey team in 04 & 05, and they followed my UMD Bulldogs who pulled off a 3 peat. The women's team pulled off two more Back2Back Title runs, while the Dance team couldn't stop winning titles, they are up to 19 now in the 21st Century.

Even the UMn Quiz Bowl team was kicking ass in the 80s after being the most dominating school back when Quiz Bowls first hit the radio and were a big thing in the late 50s. The UMn Solar Rayce Car team is also one of the winningest programs in the country. Other former Gophers won Titles in hockey and the Arena Football League and then Dungy built Tampa into a Championship capable team for another coach to win a title with what he left them, but he made up for it by getting Indy to the SB and winning it. Then his college backup, Marc Trestman, went on to win 3 Grey Cup Titles in 4 trips to the Title game, the 6th, 7th & 8th Grey Cup Titles won by Gophers over the years. with that 3rd title happening just a few years ago. And last I checked former Gopher John Anderson is one of the Top 25 winningest college baseball coaches of all-time and he's still going. More and more Gophers are getting sent to the Olympics and winning Medals. Our VB team is making more than occasional trips to the Final Four, and our Softball team is making a name for themselves. Now even our Women's CC team could pull off back to back Top 5 NCAA tourney finishes? We've become Heavyweight U as well. On the cbb side of things, both programs at UMn now are led by former Gophers, with the women's side being led by the Winningest WNBA player in history. The Men haven't done much lately cept win several NIT Titles. And if it wasn't enough that my Gophers have been doing so well lately, my UMD Bulldogs have also added a Natl Title of their own in football and recently won Back2Back Natties in Men's college hockey. The Gopher's hockey team has a new coach and he's got them picked as the early favorite to win the B1G conf this season, so maybe they can knock my Bulldogs off the top of the hockey pile?

So yeah, winning a conf title in football is a really impressive thing if you are in a legit conference at least, so I won't try to take that away from you, but in comparison, I'd much rather be a Gopher fan right now!!!

I mean, when you win those Conf Titles, that's all they do, they don't turn them into Natl Titles, and that just wouldn't be enough for us Gopher fans. Not winning your last game of the season sucks.

Hockey is WAY cooler, and the average NHLer making $800,000 more a year than the average NFLer and 2.9 million more than the average WNBAer is evidence of this.

And Minnesota doesn't suck at wbb, we've produced a #1 overall WNBA pick, the first and only Soph every to be drafted into the WNBA and the Winningest WNBA player in history, so....

Hey where is Oregon's Wlomen's CC team? UMn's ranked #6. I didn't see Oregon anywhere in the Top 30? lol

Why in the world would I discuss the Oregon women's CC team on the CFB forum in a thread dedicated to how much Minnesota sucks at college football?

Bud Grant won 7 NFL Div Titles in the last 50 years. Dave Skrein won a CFL Conf Title in 1972.

Chip Lohmiller led the NFC in scoring in 1990. He led the NFL in scoring in 1991, and again led the NFC in scoring in 1992.
