First, a hardy thanks to ChiSoxFan to initially bringing this to our attention in the Astros thread. I was so upset at wasting my time watching last night's bloodbath, then posting such in here that I completely missed his previous post informing us of this great news. I said it before and I'll repeat it, I'm not sure we could have re-signed Lance if he held out until the offseason to test the market. Maybe yes, maybe no, so why not ditch the variables and just get 'er done to eliminate the question marks. In a way, this is of course becomes a 3 year contract if the Sox choose to use the option in '24.

Lynn is a bulldog as pitchers go. He's not sheer power or light finesse, two qualities that often show decline as the years wear on many pitchers. What we're seeing now is likely what we'll be seeing for most, if not all of his contract. And the chances of us inking Rodon to a long term package are virtually dead on arrival. But the good news there is at least we have a replacement for him in the name of one Michael Kopech. Had we lost Lynn as well, I'm not confident at all that we had an internal replacement to make up for his loss too. Certainly not Crochet or Stiever or any other potential starter in the organization. My guess is Hahn would have had to go SP shopping in the winter.

You're actually both correct. Obviously, if he really wanted, Reinsdorf could afford to pay Rodon as well. But Richi's right as well, no way no how is he gonna pony up the $$$ to retain Rodon, especially not with Scott Boras calling the shots as his agent. We also have to remember that at some point, Giolito will be due for a big payday. Granted, we still have his rights for another two years, but I'm guessing the Sox will offer an extension to him as well.

IMO - Rodon will be overvalued in his next contract. He's a guy who had all kinds of arm trouble and inconsistencies since is draft date - and now- one killer year. Getting Rodon - three years or more at $25-30 million per year is a big risk - frankly.

Rodon deserves what he gets in contracts for sticking with it so long and he may well pitch without trouble for 3 or more years to come. I would be very cautious on signing him for the long term contract he will feel like he deserves.

Yeah, this is a tough one. I mean, there's a reason he was the 3rd person chosen in his draft. The man always possessed electric stuff, and to me, a completely healthy year in 2021 shows just what he brings to the mound. The question is, will that remain as is? As you point out, he's been a doctor's BFF. Can he stay healthy thru the remainder of his next contract, which yes should be pretty big. There's the real issue here.

It's really hard to say what he could have received had he tested the market. Which is why I'm so friggin glad Hahn took away this X factor. I think we all agree that Lynn would have had numerous teams seeking his services, which probably would have led to a bidding war. Yes, he's no spring chicken, so there never would have been any Gerrit Cole numbers thrown around, but a veteran with a proven, dependable arm brings a ton of value to the table. So it wouldn't surprise me if that contract would have exceeded what we gave him.

I couldn't agree with this post more. I love what he's doing right now (utterly magnificent today) but the better he does the fatter his payday gets. I get a bit anxious at the thought of investing 100+ mil into him. Especially at the idea of a long term deal. Just given the fact that he could spend multiple years injured, never regain his 2021 form, and it would surprise no one. At least, not myself.

certainly there are exceptions ... but the odds say he's not as effective after age 35 and i've seen the dropoffs happen a lot! but i do think he's got a lot going for him including the incentive of being on a top caliber team. time will tell.

I agree the "odds are" against a pitcher's longevity. In Lynn's case he throws 4 different kind of fastballs - so not much breaking stuff to wear out his arm. It's not his spin or his velocity - it is his placements and ability set up batters. I think Lynn is the kind of pitcher who is a better risk at lasting at the profession into an older age.

as for rodon ..... maybe reinsdork will surprise us. as i see it, without rodon next year we have two solid starters in gio and lynn. a probable solid starter in kopech but i'm not convinced cease will get it all together and i doubt keuchel ( again 34) will be as effective as this year. i hope he's got another year in him. also we'll lose a very big arm from the bp in kopech and bummer looks like shit to me.
what i'm saying is, maybe management will think twice about giving up on signing rodon.

I wouldn't bank on it. I mean, anything is possible, but at this point and if I'm a betting man, I'd lay a lot of large on Rodon pitching for another team next year.
