I'm only speaking for myself here, but I disagree with that. I don't think Alabama is middle or a bottom feeder in the SEC, yet I will root for every SEC team in their games minus one. Two things I won't do though, and those are root for Auburn in any situation, and I will not wear an SEC shirt with all the teams logos on it. I don't mind rooting for them to win a game to make the conference look better, but I'm not gonna represent them in any other way.
