I'm been really bothered trying to figure out the Beede rehab and why it is going so long. Today, I found this:

"With approval of the MLB Commissioner, a player who has undergone elbow UCL reconstruction surgery (so-called "Tommy John surgery") may have his Minor League Rehabilitation Assignment renewed for up to 30 additional days (in the form of three ten-day renewals)."

If true, this explains why he's still in rehab when it should have ended in early June. Unless there is another rule, however, his rehab will end July 6th. Considering his numbers, it doesn't look good. In 10 starts, he's only gone 27.1 innings, with an ERA of 7.24 and WHIP of 1.87. He does have 32 strikeouts to his name but hasn't gone further than 4.1 innings in a start. That was his 2nd to last start, on June 15th. He only last 3 innings on June 21st. He should be able to get 2 more starts in before he has to be activated from the 60 day IL.

Santos got busted for PEDs. He received an 80 game suspension which ends his 2021 season.

Since he is on the restricted list, it opens a slot on the 40-man roster.

I wouldn't quite call him a fringe guy who wouldn't make it without PEDs (unless he's been using from the beginning of his career). He's only 21 years old and is the 13th ranked prospect by MLB Pipeline. He pitched well in 2019 with Augusta, so considering his age and where he last pitched, it was very surprising that the Giants moved him all the way up to Sacramento, converting him to relief and then calling him up, despite uninspiring numbers in spring training and in AAA. In my opinion, he should have been in the starting rotation with Eugene (maybe Richmond) but the FO obviously thought he'd be better in the bullpen and really challenged him. Too bad he made that bad choice.

Fair enough...he is young. Maybe starting next year in Richmond will work out for him.

Doobie was having persistent rough ABs. Lots of chasing out of the zone, especially on balls up. Just couldn't lay off the FB at his eyes. He needs to play every day to get his swing back.

DonJuan (see what I did there?) OTOH, was absolutely RAKING in Sacto. Between Doobie and Slate, Kap didn't have a RH on the bench he could trust to have a good AB. Hence, why he pinch hit Babe Casali vs. the dog hairs. Also, with 5 guys on the roster who can play CF, Doobies versatility was less necessary if he's not hitting.

Right. That's how bleak the situation was. He couldn't trust Slate or Doobie. Now, he's got DonJuan. I think the next move will be Slate down and Jaylin up.

That is possible but I'd still rather have Slater than Tauchman. I don't understand the love for that guy. His OPS is 60 points below Slater's. I don't see how his defense makes up that kind of differential.

BU catchers aren’t really considered bench players. He is a catcher. Period. The fact that Kap felt he had to go with him in that critical situation out a spotlight on the fact he didn’t have a RH bat on the bench.

Inventory control. Slater can be sent down. Talk cannot. If Talk gets DFA’d, he will be claimed immediately.

Remember, when the Giants got Talk, they completely tore down his swing and made him start from scratch. Hard to do that during the season, but that explains why he is soooo lost at the plate.

What was the point of the tear down? Why would you do that in season if the outcome would be predictably bad? And I have no problem losing him on waivers. I don't see the value in keeping him over other players. Maybe FZ could even get some value in return.
