Yea...I mean we are basically banking on him being a version of himself from over 2 years ago. He played 28 games last year and wasn't a good fit in Philly.

I'm not saying dumping Kemba was a bad decision I just think a first and Horford is an interesting move
Horford wasn't hurt. They shut him down to see what they had in their kids. They were basically tanking.

But he has been a role player the last couple years. He is like a 5th starter type player at this point.

Boston needs more than that.

I think the Thunder were VERY surprised at what they got out of him. It was a combo of a tank but also knowing Horford had showed a lot more than they ever thought he would. His value could only go down by playing him more.

He had several really good games that helped then pull off a few upsets if I remember right

I get that.

And like I said, if you are attaching assets to get rid of a core player, you aren’t a contender.

At least not in 2022.
I haven't and don't disagree with that.

I haven't, nor have I seen anyone in this thread, argue that the Celtics as currently composed are a top contender in 2022.

which is why you don’t deal the most valuable pick they have for the next few years just to clear tax dollars.

is this really better than just eating Richardson and keibel from Dallas?

I get all that. But what is Boston's end game here? You have two stars on your roster so the goal is to build around them. Yet you're devoting nearly 30 million to Al Horford for next year. Debate whether Kemba is elite anymore is fair but I doubt anyone thinks Horford is.
You keep framing what happened today in terms that suggest the C's spent lavishly to add Horford to improve their team. That's not it at all. Rather, the C's made a move that saved money overall, both this year and especially next, and Horford just happened to be involved.

The "end game" is adding another star to team with Tatum and Brown. They tried with Kemba, but it didn't work out... so they cut bait. (Which isn't the worst strategy after making a mistake)

That goal might not happen next season, admittedly... so the goal would be to accomplish that by 22/23.

Overall, the C's are not in bad shape. They got the hard part done with 2 young stars in Brown and Tatum.

there’s a better chance of them drafting the Third star at 16 than them adding one in fa.

they’d need to tear it down to the studs to have that kind of cap space

I disagree... both because I think paying 3 guys big money is completely possible for a big market team in the NBA, and because I think many folks tend to overvalue the "star potential" of mid-1st round draft picks.

I mean maybe they can get a Horford type.

but the odds are always really low if you aren’t NY, LA or Miami.

To try and clear up my point... how do the Celtics know this is the best they can do with this? The damn season isn't even over. This feels unnecessarily desperate.

That may be a fair point.

However, I would argue that the average fan has a higher opinion of what Kemba Walker currently brings to the table then league executives do.

Your continued suggestion that an extra $20+ million in cap space that year is not consequential is baffling... especially when juxtaposed against your other suggestion that it's not possible for the C's to somehow afford a 3rd star.

Clearing that kind of cap space is exactly how they are going to be able to afford a 3rd star. (!)

2023 is two years away.

kemba has 2 years on his deal. If they want a max guy in the 2023 offseason they could’ve ridden it out rather than give away a pick for nothing

We're talking past each other then... I've been talking about the 22/23 season, where this trade saved Boston $20+ million in cap space.

wven if you do a 2022 fa,

you gotta get rid of smart and bob to do it.

and doing it a year ahead of time is a hell of a gamble. Might as well trade both of them now after the logic of this trade.

otherwise this is a half ass measure and a completely wasted pick

Thunder were moving Horford before the draft and I doubt there were ma y suitors for Walker.
