The reason this division never gets repeat winners is because there has not been 1 dominant team. They are all average to below average.

So the average team with the 1st place schedule struggles, while the team with the last place schedule grabs a few extra easy wins.

WFT has that first place schedule this year. Unfortunately, I would be very surprised if we can repeat even though I do expect the team to be better.

I think this is partially true. It’s been a while since there was a dominant team in the division.

I think all teams, with the exception of the eagles, have made some progress towards becoming a better, more consistent team. To
me, the Giants have improved the most, and the cowboys and WFT have improved the second most.

I think that a team needs consistency in all phases of its game, but especially on defense, in order for that team to be successful year in and year out.

To me, that means that though the Giants have improved the most, the team that is most likely to have sustained success is the WFT, due to its tremendous defense. If they shore up the LB position, and get consistent free safety play, they could be dominant this year.

All team try to improve on paper, but not all first place teams do. Some regres, some improve.

Simply voted to 8-8 because while Fitz will bring energy and a vote of confidence to his offense, the schedule is absolutely brutal, we have not found our long term solution at QB, we need help at OT immediately, we may need an upgrade at RG because no sane person would hold on to BS now and pay him not to come back next season. He will make this team fun to watch!

injuries will be key . if we dont suffer too many we could get 8 wins but its hard for me to project wins vs the chiefs , the bills , the pack , saints, bucs, seahawks .

its going to take me awhile to unscrew that
Why yes it is. It is easiest for me to remember when someone mentions a record in 16 games. I was just wondering is 9-8 the old 9-7 or 8-8? We can play that game all day long.

Drrrr that's right we now have Buffalo. So it's 8-8-1. Regardless of schedule we'll get some mileage and entertaining football to watch this year.

I couldn't agree more. Rivera is just getting his feet under him, your QB situation is as good or better than it was last year and you'll have more talent at the WR spot. The team could actually be better but have about the same record. The division isn't all that improved but for Dak being healthy, still ya'll's schedule...
Speaking of QB situations what are your thoughts on who the 9ers pick up at #3. I've read Shanny is the only one in the 9ers brain trust that wants Mac Jones at that spot. And maybe his is the only voice that truly matters. That said, iof its true that Shanny wants Jones. It seems everyone and their mom except Shanny thinks he would've been there at the 9ers original draft position.

Or is Shanny brilliantly fakin the funk here?

I cant believe he would trade up that far for Jones.

Me either. That's why I put the fakin the funk question in there. If Shanny does select Jones. Besides Jones' mother, Shanny just might be the only person in the country who thought/thinks Jones was worth the 3rd pk in the draft.

I know until the trade was finalized, Shanny said they were "hiding" a lot, and now they didn't have to keep doing that. That says he moved up for a specific player. Most of the reports out there point to Mac Jones, which I think is very underwhelming, as he looks like a high floor, low ceiling player. If Jones is the pick, most Niner fans will lose their minds hating on the pick.

The last couple of times Shanny has gone off-script and drafted a player that the scouting department wasn't all that high on, it blew up in his face, so I hope he's learned his lesson. Then again, he's got a pretty good track record with QBs...

I have no idea if Jones is better than Grop, but it almost doesn't matter b/c Grop can't stay on the field--over 3 years, he's missed as many games as he's played. So a change at QB was gonna happen either this season or next. The only question would be who would the new guy be.

If Jones is the pick, Niner fans will also be asking why they had to move up so far to get him. I'd have fully expected him to be available several picks further down, if not at our original pick at 12. Personally, I don't see how Shanny could take Jones at 3.

Shanny and the front office know that if we were ever gonna move up into the top 3 to get a QB, this was the year to do it. We already know who teh first 2 picks will be, so we know who will be available. 12 is easily the highest we're likely to be choosing in the next few years, so moving up would be somewhat cheaper (basically same price as Eagles/Wentz). And a rookie would be coming to a good situation since we're a run-first team with a good OL and good players to throw to. Shanny just got a contract extension, so he can endure the struggles of a rookie QB without losing his job.

Jones did break the record for best completion percentage ever.

I know people want to equate his success with surrounding talent but that can be done for all QBs.

I don't remember who it was, but some talking head said something along these lines of. Shanny's great @ working with whoever the QB is at the time. He than mentioned Matt Schaub, RG3 n Matt Ryan. But not so great when its him picking who the QB will be. He didn't mention any names on that front.

If they do keep Jimmy G I'm thinking the pick is Lance, at the same time given his injury history. Fields seems like a, I dunno, safer pick. This is assuming that Wilson gets tabbed by the Jets. Or maybe he goes for Pitts, is that the stud TE's name? Him n Kittle would give defenses fits. Plus Kittle could help the kid become a terror as a blocker.

Some good points made on Shanny not being the one to choose a QB.

Fields is someone that keeps getting left out of the discussion most of the time. The biggest drawback for him is that he's never worked under center, whereas both Lance and Jones have, and Shanny's running system is mostly done under center. Hard count, Dropping back and hiding the ball before the handoff are all key, though underappreciated, parts of that system.

It's gonna be a QB at 3. I don't think it matters who gets taken at 2. I agree that a 2 TE system with Pitts and Kittle would be unreal, but considering what we paid to move up, there is just no way it's not a QB.

@deanpet21 , this is my response to your question in the NFL forum. My previous posts in this thread were also on this topic. Posts #s 54, 56, 59. Beyond that, here are my thoughts both predraft and postdraft.

Predraft, these were my big picture thoughts, why we traded up this year—regardless of who we took:
--Top 10 QBs --The top 10 is where SB-level Qbs are found the overwhelming majority of the time. That is what the stats say.

--QB-needy Teams--This year, the best QBs wouldn't be falling to us at 12 and honestly, the best 4 are likely to go in the top 10 or so. So if we want a QB this year, we'd have to move up to get him.

--Draft Position—We were at 12, it’s the highest the 9ers should expect to draft for the next few years. Think about it--despite covid, no real TC, players opting out, and a rash of injuries to all our best players unlike anything i've ever seen before, we still won 6 games and could've easily won 2 other games, all while playing in the toughest division in the NFL. And with this being the worst season we've had since Shanny's early days, and expecting quite a 2021 boost from healthy starters, the 2 future #1s are expected to be in the late teens or early 20's (at worst). So, moving up would likely cost us more if we waited another year or 2.

--Job Security—Shanny’s new contract extension runs through 2025. So he and Lynch have lots of job security that could help them get through a shaky year or so while a young QB gets his legs under him. Shanny is the first HC to get an extension in the York ownership era (let that sink in...) so barring a murder spree, Kyle isn't going to be sent packing until late in 2023 at the earliest.

--Top 3--We all know Lawrence is going 1 and Wilson is going 2. So at 3, we’re guaranteed out pick of Lance, Fields, Jones, with both Lance and Fields reportedly being rated higher than any QB in next year’s draft.

Overall, I have to admit that I've never been more "What the hell is going to happen?" with a Niner draft pick like I am with this one.

Here are my thoughts after we drafted Lance:
Trey Lance. The big boom/bust pick at the Qb position this year.

--apparently only 3 or 4 people in the Niner FO knew Lance was the choice, neither the assistants nor the scouts were told

--Much like Smith/Rodgers, the choice of Lance will be measured against the success of Fields and Jones. If Lance was the right pick, what we gave up to get him won’t matter. OTOH, if he’s a bust or significantly worse either of Fields or Jones, then the traded picks will multiply the damage caused by the failure.

--Seeing how far down Fields and Jones fell, it sure looks like we took the higher rated QB in Lance.

--Just about everything I've read today made clear that had we passed on Lance, he wouldn't have fallen like Fields and Jones did

--Matt Miller said he was the best fit for the Niners

--his HS and college coaches called him a film junky, as he didn’t just watch film, he knew HOW to watch film

--Saw more than one report that Lance's scores on the NIners' psych/mental tests were off the chart high

--SF is the best landing spot for any rookie QB this year, as he can sit for a year with Grop starting, we’ve got an offensive-minded HC, a PB LT, an AllPro TE, good receivers, and a strong running game.
