Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Fernando Tatis Jr. has agreed to a 14-year, $340 million contract extension with the Padres.

Robert Murray of FanSided was first to report the dollar amount of the deal. It's the longest contract in baseball history, edging past the 13-year deals of Bryce Harper and Giancarlo Stanton. In terms of money it's the third-most lucrative behind Mookie Betts' $365 million deal and Mike Trout's $360 million pact. Tatis Jr. wasn't even arbitration-eligible yet and wouldn't have been slated for free agency until after the 2024 season, but he and the Padres have been talking about a long-term extension for a while now. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com says that the contract begins in 2021, so it will run through 2034. Dennis Lin of The Athletic hears that the Padres would like to make the deal official this weekend.

What do you think? My thoughts, I think it is a little disingenuous with the “longest contract” because IMO it really isn’t a 14 year deal because he is already under Padres control. But it is weird for both sides. Shocking Tatis Jr is willing to give up free agency in his prime. And weird the Padres are so willing to fork out that much when Tatis’s body isn’t even fully developed yet.

This is a fantastic deal for the padres. By APY, hes making basically what Cano was but I guess we will see the fineprint when it comes out.

I think it is a shit load of money for a guy that has had 121 good games in the majors. I mean he hit .313 in his first 37 games of 2020 with 13 homers then hit .208 in the last 22 games with 4 homers. Good for him but funny that they got him because they needed to dump James Shields contract and save roughly $20M just 4.5 years ago...lol.

Sure, but Shields never got the cover of a video game and 99% of baseball fans had no idea he was a Padre. Not sure how it is nationally but locally you can’t watch a game on the Pac 12 Network without seeing his commercial.

It's a ballsy move by a team going for it for the next 10 years, but there are a lot of ways these huge deals can come back to bite you.

That said, if Kelenic and Julio look like they're living up to their potential early on, I hope we have the balls to lock them up long term too.

The Padres I feel probably saw the crap return the Indians received for Francisco Lindor so waiting until near free agency to make a trade or deal can back fire. They probably thought this is the best move locking him up the rest of his career would be the safer move.

With that being said they really thought high of Evan White by locking him in before he even hit the majors but definitely backfired when he came up and started striking out left and right. Also like someone mentioned both Kelenic and Julio I'm sure are licking their fingers to try and earn a mega pay day like that. Which would be a cool situation to have as it means they are all star generational talent.

I don't like the long term agreements (14years?) in a MLB contract... So much can go south over those 14 years when it comes to a player... For example, Mike Trout signs a 12 year deal in 2019... He then has the worst season in a while by his standards by while hitting .291 and then in 2020 he hit .281... So he's basically been regressing the two years since he's signed the 12 year agreement... He was always hitting around the .305-310 range prior to that...

If he continues to hit. That is a lot of merch to sell to make up for $300+ million. Best of luck to them.

Again, my point is he has only hit successfully in 121 games to start his career and then hit a slump the last 22 games. Is he for real? I understand he can draw fans and get national publicity, but that only lasts as long as he continues to hit. Small sample size in my opinion. To compare him to Lewis, Lewis has played well in his first 54 games but has slumped in his last 22. Is Lewis really that close to a $300M+ deal? Not even close IMO.

I like SD having lived in SD County for two years a lifetime ago. I hope it works, but SD is a lot like AZ in that there really isn't a huge home fan base. Both places are filled with people from other places so they don't have that history. I like what they have done though and I hope they win it all for the way they committed money to this team.
