Rams give up the farm to get Goff in 2016 draft!
The Rams pulled off a blockbuster trade sending picks 15, 43, 45 and 76 in this year’s draft, plus their first- and third-rounders next year, to the Titans for the No. 1 pick, plus picks 113 and 177.

Rams resign Goff to four-year, $134 million extension

Rams dump Goff! Basically, the Lions got extra for Stafford by taking Goff, who has $43.25 million in fully-guaranteed payments over the next two years

Tennessee Titans use Rams trade to go from worst to playoff team. Detroit now hopes to do the same.....

In their defense, the Rams were one quarter away from a SB win...the Titans haven’ sniffed a SB.

Eh, a good chunk of that trade was: "Hey, we fucked up by signing Jared 'the Goof' Goof (uh... eh whatever) to a ridiculous contract, can you take this from us and give us a QB that knows how to pass a ball?"

Detroit needs to completely blow up the team, and you're not doing that without draft picks.
Meanwhile, the Rams need a QB that can actually pass the ball with the talented weapons that's already available.

I'll stand by my A/A grade (or something similar to it) for both teams.

I’m real curious to see what Matt Stafford is now that everything is stacked in his favor, rather than against

At least they've been competitive, but they do now have a short window to maximize what they can do. Lack of draft picks and age is going to catch up with them soon

I'm guessing 2 years of being a Super Bowl contender and then in year 3 Ramsey and Donald get traded because the team will need to rebuild.

NFC West is tough. You could go from competing for a Super Bowl to 4th place in a single season.

Goff and Wentz were going to be the top 2 picks in the 2016 Draft just as Winston and Mariota were going to be the top 2 picks in 2015. The Rams gave up slightly less than the Draft chart suggested to get the #1 pick. The Eagles gave up slightly more than the chart suggested to get the #2 pick. Both teams paid a fair market price. Whether any of those 4 players picked was worthy of being a top 2 pick is a different issue.

The Rams got more out of Goff than they got out of Greg Robinson and Tavon Austin combined. Austin's extension cost the Rams $18M for a year which Austin spent on the bench. If you want to laugh at the Rams that should be the target.

The post was well-stated and well linked. You gave me a face palm for that?
My point was the Rams have made some blunderous moves with the Goff situation.
NOT that they should have not done this one - though I would not have.....

Yes, 100%. The Rams are still in their window but QB seems to continually be their problem. Rather than throw good money after bad by keeping him, they pay through the nose to get an upgrade in Stafford and dump Goff. And speaking of Stafford, the guy has never had such a talented team around him, so this will go a long way in evaluating him.

It's very clear. The Rams are and have been going all in just about every year. This trade means they won't ahve a 1st rd pick for 6 or 7 years straight? When was the last time that happened?

I have to admit that I admire a FO that isn't afraid to admit when they made mistake. It's something I've always admired about Seattle's FO (ala Percy Harvin). And here, the Rams are refusing to throw good money after bad and they're more than willing to continue to mortgage the future b/c they're in the middle of their window. It's hard to blame them.

What did they give up? They didn't have a first available this year and didn't give up their 2nd or highest 3rd either. In terms of a trade before the 2021 draft, future picks are typically devalued by a round per year. So in comparison to a 2021 1st, a 2022 1st is comparable to a 2021 2nd, and a 2023 1st is comparable to a 2021 third (due to uncertainty about placement of the pick and years lost from developing a 2021 pick). The 2021 3rd they gave up is the compensatory pick the Rams are receiving for losing their scouting director to the Lions (ironically). Those future 1sts will likely be in the bottom half of the round at best anyway.

Titans were a win a way last year. The Rams really only got their because of a blown call and didnt show much in the actual game.

Here's the ultimate key i think.

The Rams were a top rated D in numbers this year but we dont know how great they actually were ultimately. Top Offenses like Buffalo and Green Bay performed well against that D and they didnt really play that many other good offenses. They held Tampa in check and Seattle who had already bottomed out offensively when the Rams played them.

Im not so sure they can sustain what they did defensively this year and when you couple that with likely losses defense and the coaching staff I think regression will be expected, just not sure how much.

The draft picks they gave up aren't going to be that valuable anyway.

Not sure how you are devaluing picks so that's on you. But what I see is Rams gave p a QB that lead them to SB, the just paid a lot of money and two first-round picks and a third-round pick to the Detroit Lions for Matthew Stafford. What has Stafford done, where has he lead them? I like Stafford but I am unsure he is that much better than Goff.
