Actually, in the Dodgers' case, the changes gave them no help. They were gonna get in as the 1 seed anyway, and they didn't get a real home field advantage. They had to play a 3 gamer in the first round which helps the underdog. They were the best team, and they finally got a ring.

I say that as a Giants fan and it makes me throw up but it's true. Dodgers are probably the best team since the late 90s Yankees.

Asterisks are usually applied when something occurs outside of the norm. Sports fans are using it in a totally different context here.

I don’t believe the Dodgers title was easier in any way, but my point is that while both playoffs were far from normal, the NBA playoffs were actually a lot closer than MLB.

Maybe you have an example, but cannot recall an asterisk ever being used when an accomplishment was made more difficult.

Honestly the only one I can recall at all that might have been official (at least it was at one time, I think) was the one for Maris because he was allowed more games to pass the HR record.

That would make the NBA a little easier, imo. Not that either was easier than a normal year. But a team is more likely to be upset in a 3 or 5 game series than in a 7 game series. That 3-1 deficit the Dodgers overcame in the NLCS?...that same deficit in the NLDS sends them home.

The shortened regular season does mean that teams were fresher when the playoffs started (I think that's part of why Kershaw pitched better). But the NBA had 4 months off before they started their playoffs. So, while they did play closer to a full regular season, they weren't exactly worn down and dealing with the usual nagging injuries, etc. going into the playoffs like they would in a normal season.

I am talking about why asterisks are used in life. Not just sports.

Asterisks are applied in books when the author wants to make a footnote about something. Footnotes are often used when there is something out of the ordinary that the author wants to explain in more detail.

That almost certainly applies in this case.

That is all I was saying.

Literally the only thing I am saying here is that baseball was more different because they changed their format while the NBA didn’t.

OK...but we are talking sports, not life. Riley making the asterisk comment was absurd as I think you seem to realize...yet for some reason want to condone the comment.

correct...and we are pointing out in our opinion an asterisk is absurd, especially for MLB, as the format change made it harder. Despite your attempt to move the goal posts and make this about any subject it's kind of clear we are talking about sports.

Can you think of any other time in sports anyone brought up the idea of an asterisk for something that was made more difficult? Maybe there is an example, but I cannot come up with one.

No.

You are picking apart a small piece of what I said and misrepresenting the point I was making.

Some things never change.

correct. Irrational. You are all over the place and instead of owning it you try and make it about me instead.

Classic.

You don’t even know what the conversation is about.

I was responding to the Skip Bayless quote. Wasn’t about Riley at all.

And just because you don’t agree with my logic backing up my comment doesn’t make it irrational.

Especially when I very clearly stated multiple times that both titles are legit.

I know exactly what it's about. Even made mention you said titles were legit...but you also try and make excuses for Riley making the comment. Hence, all over the place. as for MLB side you still cannot find any instance an asterisk has been used or even suggested when a situation was made harder for a team. You did try to move the goal posts and deflect to use all situations, though (not sports). Nice try.

Again, not about Riley. This is about Bayless.

Get a clue.

That one wasn't on Baker defense couldn't get off the field. Even with wind that basically made them one dimensional
Um, if your defense holds the other team to 16, I think you gotta look elsewhere for what went wrong.
