Here was the WAR for Beltre and Werth from 2006-2010:

5.4/DNP
3.8/3.0
5.6/3.7
3.3/4.5
7.8/4.5
WAR is only one way to compare players. There are other ways. I never use WAR myself. It is based on someone's theory about which stays should be given more weight than others and how much more.

Most fans complaint about Beltre, and there were many who complained, is that he does well in his contract year and wanted us to stay away from him. I think the focus of that was when he was with the Dodgers and far exceeded anything he had done in the previous 6 years. In Seattle he missed about 30 games in his contract year. In Boston he can exceeded all previous seasons put together except that contract year with LA. But in Texas he turned out to be consistently good.
I think it was an empty complaint all along. I think those fans were grasping at straws to give the organization an excuse if they did not sign Beltre.

I get that. But I'm not sure there's any metric that demonstrates Werth was a $120m player and Beltre was an $80m player, which seemed to be what you were saying.

(beyond what someone was willing to pay them, obviously)

I can see a team looking at their numbers and being wiing to give Werth $2 million more per year. It is not much difference per year. The difference in length may have related to their recent health. I am not willing to do that much digging. I am just saying we paid well for Beltre, and based on what Rendon has done I would have certainly paid well for him. I think JD intended to go that high, but he outsmarted himself when he thought he could start cheaper and with less years. I think when Rendon signed JD was shocked that he didn't get to negotiate more. Maybe they never meant to sign him to begin with like some have suggested, but I think he just messed up the negotiations.

At some point we are going to have to pay top dollar for a hitter or two. I am talking about Rendon money for one and not a whole lot below that for another. We just can't produce those kind of guys on tne farm under present management. That is, if we are wanting to go and finally win a WS. If winning 86-88 games is the goal then we might be able to avoid big expenditures.

that is one reason I do not want to trade Gallo as long as he continues on his current path.

It depends on what satisfies owners. If they are happy with the money they have coming in, then we may never see big hitters. They are business men and don't care about anything but making money. We need new owners to get to a WS.

smart money says that we pass on the options on Kluber, Frazier and Chirinos, don't re-sign Choo and re-sign Minor. now if we had real owners, i could see us signing Ozuna and Anthony Rizzo to play LF and 1B on long term deals and adding maybe James McCann C and Maikel Franco on short term deals to hold the fort until Huff and Jung are ready and moving Calhoun to DH. But what will probably happen they waste the money on Kluber, Frazier, Chirinos and re-sign Choo and talk about how good we're going to be in 2021

I have no problem with paying top dollar for a top dollar hitter.
