I said prior to the start of the season that we might only go as far as our pen will take us, being that this was the strength of our team's pitching. If we're to make it to the postseason, we'd likely need to rely on the pen playing a huge role. It certainly didn't look that way in our opening series against the Twins, where a number of them got rocked. But since then, with only one exception, the pen has not given up any runs.

They actually pitched 20 consecutive scoreless innings spanning 5 games before that one less-than-great outing, where they were scored upon 5 times over 6 innings in the 11-5 win against the Royals. 3 of those came in just 2/3 of an inning when Frye got slammed. In all, since the Twin series, the pen has posted a 1.61 ERA. Them's winning numbers.

I remember being a little miffed when MLB.com listed the top 10 BPs in the game and ours wasn't one of them. I thought they deserved a little street cred and belonged in that upper tier. It sure didn't appear to be so during the Minny series, but since then, I think they're performing to expectations, perhaps even exceeding them.

Bullpens are so hard to judge from year to year. Guys who were great the year before may stink up the joint in the current season.

However - if the starters catch up to the bullpen in success -it will be a lights out sprint to short season finish. Go Sox!

If we had Cleveland's starters and our pen, we'd win 45 games. I'm convinced we need to steal their pitching scouts because the Tribe continues to put out top notch rotational talent. Shit, they've lost Kluber and Bauer and yet still may possess the best overall rotation in the game. Amazing.

Carrasco returning from a bout with cancer and looking so good is a stroke of good fortune. But yes, obviously, he was pretty dang good to begin with.

Just overall they seem to keep spitting out really good starting pitchers. It has to be in the scouting. They know how to find the gems.

Let's wait and see how the Indian's pitching settle in - before anointing them genius stripes for pitching. These guys will throw out their arms sooner or later. They took the mounds down about half a foot in the late 60's and made a certain doctor named Andrews a fortune.

Probably a mixture of scouting, coaching top to bottom in their system, good analytics department, and luck. Luck always plays a role. So, I don't say that to knock anyone.

And boy have we needed him. Let's hope he can keep this up. Our BP overall has been very good, but individually, I haven't been impressed with Frye or Cishek, the latter of whom I was expecting stud performances.

Oh and on an even worse note, Jimmy Lambert has been moved to the 45 day IL, meaning he's all but toast for the rest of the campaign. And we can only hold our collective breath as to Rodon's status.

Maybe Kopech was smart about pitching under these circumstances.

Well back to Detwiler, looks like he's the next man up in the rotation if Rodon is shelved for any length of time.

why not foster?
I'm fine with either, altho Ricky may be more comfortable with Detwiler, being he was a starter for part of last season, even tho he blew chunks. Actually, all things being equal, I'd just as soon see that Rodon is ok and will be back in the rotation asap.

Whoa...well tell us how you really feel - don't hold back.
this is his 6th year? don't you feel his 'slot' would be better off taken by someone promising? dependability is an aspect i see as important and he has show he has NONE! in addition he's lost the traits that made him promising at one time. he's dropped 5 mph off his velocity, he no longer has the sinker that was maybe his best pitch and has become all fastball (not so fast anymore) and slider. he's taking up space better used by someone else.
why is it so hard to let go of people you once thought so vital but are now practically worthless? if 6 years isn't enough then what is?

Well I agree with one thing. This is likely his last year with the team and if he's cooked for the year, then I believe it's a foregone conclusion. Still, I would have liked to see him give us one good, healthy year, even just one. Not a lot to ask.

We knew that some of these guys weren't gonna pan out...Rodon appears to be one of those. Hopefully it stays to a minimum from here. Most of the new young guys in the lineup appear to be the goods, so we just gotta find some starting pitching....

...and then from outside our bubble: Pray the Yankees have some serious issues in the upcoming years...because they look kind of unbeatable.
