Speaking of drivers who were given a ride because of who they are related to...

But you're correct, he's better than I give him credit for.

I always thought it was shitty of Childress not to let Litte E use the #3* and I thought it was even shittier that he let his no talent grandson use it. But he's not as bad as I originally thought.

* I still think it was shitty of him. Because it was a shitty move. He could have worked out a deal to let him, Little E, use the number and give it back when he retired or after a certain number of season etc etc. From what I've seen Little E never seemed to bothered by it so maybe I should let it go too... but still.
Also, the number 8 had a close association to Dale Sr. It was his number in his early days of Cup racing, and the number of the Busch car he owned and drove a lot.

Terresa was a bitch when she insisted on keeping the 8 when Dale Jr left for Hendrick though. Legally, she had the right, but morally, she was wrong. Thankfully Robert Yates was a treasure and let him take the 88

While I was watching he had a lead of over 1.2 seconds. I figured he'd be the car to beat when I went to bed.

@Chewbaccer
1. As a huge David Pearson fan it used to drive me nuts that the Wood Brothers wouldn't come to Nashville for the 420.

2. Chase is cute? I work with 2 ladies who adore him. lol.

3. I too was skeptical of Little E at first but he did earn his bones.

Also, what was the deal with the lights under the car? Simply to denote manufacturers?
Is that just for last night or all night time races now?

:noidea:

this reminds me when Kasey Kahne came to give a speech at my high school. couple of teachers + classmates were going insane b/c they thought Kahne was hawt

after Kahne gave the speech, the general consensus was "he looks better on TV"

It actually wasnt as big a deal as most fans realize.
the #3 was the # RC raced & Dale took over. Granted Dale Sr. made it legendary but it was always a Childress family #.
#8 was Ralph Earnhardts # & that was passed down to Dale. Which Dale Jr. was more than proud to carry the #.
#8 was always an Earnhardt Family #. So as far as the participants goes. They had the #'s they wanted.
I really dont think Dale Jr. would have wanted to race the #3. In fact right after Dale's death. I dont think any driver would have wanted to run that #.
Technically you cant retire a # in Nascar. You can hold the rights to that # for one year of it not being used. After that Anyone can claim it. No one messed with that # out of respect for Dale Sr.

Richard Petty after he retired that team went to #44, but the following year they went back to the #43 so not to lose the rights to the #.

The fans made a big deal about Dale Jr. not getting the #3, but in the racing community it wasnt as big a deal.

Is that still the case. It seems like Richard Childress had to get permission from Andy Petree to use the 33, despite Petree’s team being defunct for several years

IDK about now but at that time each team would ask NASCAR for the number they wanted. Childress would ask for the 3 each year then not run it. Most all the teams did a gentleman's agreement on what numbers they would ask for. Other then the 43 and the 3 I can't remember any other numbers having an issue.

The 8 between Theresa Earnhardt and Jr, but that was more of an in house issue.

I’m gonna predict a wreck fest tonight. The Cup Series will be the first race of the weekend on a track that is known for being low grip

They need to scrap the low HP, high downforce package. And whoever thought it was a good idea to begin with needs to be fired. They've made 1.5 mile tracks unwatchable.

And Tyler Reddick's crew chief needs fired. Had one of the best long run cars on the track, but would drop a few spots on restarts, but get them back fairly quickly, and twice his crew chief decided to take 2 tires where he still fell back on the restarts, but wasn't able to pass the guys with 4 tires. Took a car that should have finished somewhere around 6 and turned it into a 13th place run.

Passed Jimmie in points, gained a couple points on Byron, but lost some points to Erik Jones.

Yep, Maurice Petty dies at 81 years of age. Another member of the Petty Enterprises clan moves on.

The question would be is Kyle running it now? I can't see Richard giving something up that him, his brother, and his father built from the ground up.

I don't know the answer to that Oyankeefan. I have not seen any indication Kyle is even remotely interested in running RPM in any capacity.

It isn't Kyle or a member of the Petty family, I forget the dude's name, but Richard has a partner that owns 2/3 of the team.

It hasn't truly been Richard's team since 2008, after he merged with Evernham in 2009 and it became RPM.
