White Sox pitcher Kopech dealing with personal matter

Apparently it's not covid-related, but I'm not sure this development makes me any happier. There's nothing here on which we can speculate, but having to miss the start of the 2020 campaign due to personal reasons rings alarm bells. I wasn't counting on Kopech coming out of the gate in the rotation, but I was expecting him to at least be on the opening day roster. Hopefully, it's nothing more than the kid missing a few weeks and he returns as normal.

Could be a family member with a bad case of COVID? So long as he's back in time to get some work in. I would expect him to be ready to go for the regular season.

If he misses at most a couple of weeks, and even that timeline is kind of stretching things, then there's a possibility he could still begin the season on the team. Anything beyond that and there's no way, he'll be on the taxi squad at best. In any event, the chances of him starting the season in the rotation are now zero, altho it's likely he had little chance anyway. But I'll happily accept a Michael Kopech and his 100mph smokers making a few relief appearances until he fully gets his sea legs under him.

I'll miss him, but it is really hard to quantify the loss of his services.

Yeah, teams never lose pitchers during the course of a season.

Old miserable asshole. We already assume you think everything has a dark cloud over it.

Nobody is counting this as a full season anyway. Literally, you're just a redundant old, dying (hopefully) bore.

I wonder what the personal matter is. Hope everything is okay on the homefront.

He has a young family. I believe that's the ethic.

Nah, he just got married. No kids.

Even if so - that wouldn't make sense. To be honest, short of some extraordinary circumstance where there's someone living with you that's particularly vulnerable? The only reason to skip this is because you don't think it's worth risking injury, etc. There's nothing with kids, pregnancies, etc. which says you can't work. None of those people are more vulnerable.

I think he simply doesn't want to play. Again, unless there's legitimately a bad personal issue.

Kopech's arm was ready 10 months ago. He's made 4 major league starts. He's what? 24 now? 25 next year? Jesus. I'm starting to get a little worried. He's starting to look like a piece of cheese and we're hamsters on a wheel. I don't know if this is ever going to happen.

Reading that this could be a retaliation move for White Sox possibly putting him in the bullpen, starting the season on the taxi squad, etc.

Also reading conflicting reports saying he's been dealing with depression.

Does Kopech's club control portion of his career pause for a year?

You know @richig07 - his wife may be pregnant with complications or any number of reasons not in public view to have him make this decision. He doesn't get paid this year either.

We also shouldn't overlook the possibility that Kopech is once again struggling with depression. I hope this isn't the case here, but he does have a history of this. I guess all the speculation doesn't amount to a hill of beans as to the actual reason. Whatever it is, I hope it comes out well and that we see him on the mound throwing heaters in 2021.

I read in the Athletic - that Kopech was most concerned about the idea the Sox had no plan on how he will be used during the 60 games. He felt that might put his arm in jeopardy - a three week warmup - didn't seem long enough if he was going to be used as a starter and even more mayhem could ensure for his arm if he was cast in a long or short reliever role.

When Sox fans are implying that you're the guy that will make up for Chris Sale...

...But you have yet to do anything of significance at the MLB level 4 years later at age 24...the age at which said Sale dropped 226 K's and a 3 ERA.

Yeah...I'd say there might be a little pressure. So to hear "Dude, you're not in starting 5, take a seat behind Gio Gonzalez" was probably soul-crushing.

if he's a freaking head case we may be better off without him.

Because this is such a whacked off season anyway, I'm will to cut the guy some slack. But of course injuries aside, there really can be no excuse for not being out there for all of 2021 and beyond.
