I've been pondering this for awhile, I wonder if Zaidi has numbers that show optimal times to DFA someone to get them through waivers and so forth. I'm sure there's SOME method to the madness.
There has to be some method but I'm not sure it is effective. He's lost quite a few of those who's tried to pass through (and, unfortunately, kept a few that I wish were claimed).

It's probably marginal at best. Would have been nice to keep Tom Murphy last year

When I saw the Chris Sale news, I thought it was only a matter of time for Beede's announcement. If there is any silver lining to this corona virus mess, he may not be missing much of a season. Of course, that just means all players lose probably a half season. Really stinks for those who were primed to break out or are in their prime.

Shaun Anderson and Steven Duggar optioned to Sacramento today.
Kinda weird that transactions are going on right now but I guess poor FZ is going stir crazy and so the owners are rationing out some movement for him to make before he goes nuts from a lack of transactions.

Here is the 60 man pool (only 51 listed), announced last night - Giants Announce Initial Player Pool
A few names left off the list:
Pitchers - Melvin Adon, Tyler Beede, Enderson Franco, Jandel Gustave, Reyes Moronta; Sean Hjelle, Jake Jewell, Sam Moll, Raffi Vizcaino, Sam Wolff
Catchers - Aramis Garcia; Ricardo Genoves
Infielders - Keon Wong; Cristhian Adames, Drew Robinson
Outfielders - Chris Shaw, Jose Siri

The following guys were optioned or reassigned to minor league camp back in March, but are now on the 60 man pool: Shaun Anderson, Conner Menez, Sam Selman; Tyler Cyr, Luis Madero; Joey Bart; Abiatal Avelino; Steven Duggar

So the Giants have decided to carry some of the guys on the 40 man roster on the 60 man pool but not all of them. I know that Moronta and A Garcia are both recovering from extensive surgeries but there was some talk of possibility appearing late in the season if rehab goes as planned.

I do wonder if the first set of guys opted not to play this year or if the Giants just aren't interested in them. Adon, Franco, Gustave, Wong, Shaw and Siri are probably the list of guys who could get dfa'd to make room for non-roster guys like Cahill, Brantly or Heineman, Ruf, Sanchez, Sandoval, Hamilton and/or Rickard as additions to the 40 man.

Apparently, guys can be added to the 60 man pool but once on the list, they cannot be taken off and be later added back on (unless FZ's carousal really does happen after all, then all bets are off).

Get well soon Tyler Beede. I will say that I don't have a lot of hope for him even if he does get well though.

Well dang. Missed his first call up to the show.

From The San Francisco Chronicle

"The Giants released nonroster invite Pablo Sandoval and three others Sunday, but Panda fans should not despair. This was a procedural move, and the club plans to re-sign him and the other three.

All four are expected to join the Giants for what teams are calling Summer Camp when it begins Wednesday.

The other three are pitcher Trevor Cahill, infielder Yolmer Sanchez and outfielder Billy Hamilton.

They would be part of the Giants’ 60-man pool of players eligible to play in the 60-game season under the agreement the league signed with the Players Association last week.

The clerical moves with Sandoval, et al., likely were done to change contract language regarding opt-out clauses for the four players, who all have a solid chance to make the 30-man Opening Day roster.

The Giants had to submit a player pool to the league by 1 p.m. PDT Sunday. But as of Sunday evening they had not announced a list, possibly to complete the renegotiated deals with Sandoval, Cahill, Hamilton and Sanchez. The Giants could be delaying the announcement to complete other transactions, including potential trades.

Most teams that have announced rosters listed fewer than 60 players, leaving space to add others through trades, waivers and free-agent signings. The Giants are expected to do likewise because the rules make it easier to add players than remove them.

The Giants are expected to add their entire 40-man roster, leaving them 20 additional spots. Top prospects Joey Bart, Marco Luciano, Heliot Ramos and Hunter Bishop are expected to be included.

Players will report to Oracle Park on Wednesday to be tested for the coronavirus, then will be quarantined until they get their results. If negative, they can return to the park Friday to begin training for a 60-game season scheduled to begin July 23 or 24.

Teams can invite as many of the 60 players to their main training site as they choose, with the rest reporting to an alternate training site. The Giants expect that to be in Sacramento, but might not open it straight away, having their entire pool train at Oracle, at least initially.

The 60-man pools are not set in stone for the season. Teams can add players, but if they already have 60, they need to clear spots in traditional fashion.

Players on the 40-man must be waived, traded, designated for assignment, placed on the 45-day injured list (which is 60 days in a normal season), released or outrighted to the minors. They also can be removed from the pool if they are added to a special COVID injured list.

Those not on the 40-man can be removed via trade, released or placed on the COVID injured list."

That Chronicle article came out before the Giants released their 60 man pool list. Those NRI guys are on the 60 man pool, and, as I noted, not all 40 man players were on the 60 man list.

Looks like we claimed Jose Siri off waivers from the Cubs back in March. Not too surprised it was missed as that was when everything was starting to be shut down.

I THINK the corresponding move was outfighting Enderson Franco, but the timing doesn’t seem right.

Edit: Apparently, we did discuss the Siri deal. I just didn’t see him on the roster and figured he was missed...

I think Siri came from the Reds too.
As for Franco, it is probably the first of a few guys that will be removed to clear space for about 5 or 6 non roster players. I would guess that Franco was removed now for probably the same reason as Tyson Ross was released. At least the assumption is that the Giants released Ross because he has chosen to sit out the 2020 season. Not any real reason to hang on to him considering he was signed to a minor league deal only for 2020. I haven't heard that Franco has announced that, so I am merely speculating.

How does the 60 effect the 40 and vice versa?

How does the 60 effect the 40 and vice versa?
My understanding is that the 40 works like normal. A player on the active roster (starting at 30 and slowly moving down to 26 within the first month of this brief season) has to be on the 40 man roster. Apparently, though, being on the 40 man roster does NOT guarantee being in the 60 man pool. A player has to be on the 60 man pool to be eligible to play. A team can add a player to the 60 man pool at any time but if they take a player off the 60 man pool, they cannot add him back on (the only exception to this that I can find is if they lose a player to another team and then re-acquire him). So, in order for a player to participate in the season, he has to be on all three of the active roster (30 to 26), 40 man roster and 60 man pool.

So we have a ven between the 40 and 60 (and the 26 is a subset of the overlap)... you can be on the 40, but not the 60. You can be on the 60, but not the 40. But to be on the 26, you need to be on both.

You CAN be added to the 60 during the season, with no options or clock starting. You can also be removed from the 60 with no side effects, outside of not being able to be re-added to the 60 without actually changing teams first (more than merely clearing waivers).

OK, I think I got it...

Are Options a thing this year? Do you have to use an option on a player if they are removed from the 26?

My understanding is yes, but I don't know if it will be "optioned to 60 man pool" or if the transaction will actually list a minor league club.

From MLB Trade Rumors:

The Giants added four names to their 60-man player pool: Will Wilson, Camilo Doval, Luis Toribio and Chad Tromp, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports. It’s a group of fairly high-end prospects for the Giants, highlighted by Wilson, whom they essentially spent $12.6MM to acquire last year by taking on Zack Cozart’s contract, writes Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. Catcher Chadwick Tromp has the best chance to train with the major league camp, as the others are more likely to head to the alternative camp when it opens in Sacramento, per Schulman. The Giants have four empty slots remaining from their 60-player pool.

It's funny how opinions differ here, because I see this list as highlighted by Toribio. I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised by the amount of love he gets once the media starts to get a look from him. He's legit.
