Dak Prescott could actually be looking at the exact same think Kirk Cousins went through. It could work for the Cowboys or it could blow up in their face.

I think we can all agree that Dak is somewhere in the area of 13-16 when it comes to QB rankings. Many have said he does not deserve to be paid top 5 money and I think the Cowboys believe that as well. The problem with that argument is that the QB market is not set based on talent but based on the franchise QB availability. Being a franchise QB does not mean that you are 1st team all pro. It means that you can lead the team you are on for the next 10+ teams because you have the ability to play the position at a high level. Dak is not going to carry a team but with the right pieces he can play really well. He has shown that.

The franchise tag for next season is set to be at $26 mil next year. That is within the range that I feel Dak should be paid ($25-$28 mil) as a QB. If you take into account that for the most part teams overpay especially for the QB position signing Dak at $30 mil does not seem that far fetched. The Cowboys could Dak for the next 2 years at the money they feel he is worth at $26.7 mil next years. We need to assume a jump for 2021 so let's say that number is at $29 mi. Those numbers probably fall in the range he should be paid.

Now this is where this could all blow up in the Cowboys face. If they do this they are going to have to pay Dak even more money after the 2020 season because as we all know QB salaries are going to go up. They may not want to pay $30 mil now but after 2020 they may be looking at $35 mil a year. The biggest reason using the Cousins tactic can blow up is because of Patrick Mahomes. He is in the 3rd year of his rookie deal. There is no 5th year option on his contract so I can assure you that he will not go into training camp next year without a new deal. If Mahomes does a repeat of last year we are looking at the NFL's first $40 million dollar QB. That could only mean more money for Dak. No he is not near as good as Mahomes but if Mahomes gets $40 Dak can make the argument for $35.

Who doesn't have a 5th year? Are you talking Dak or Mahomes? Mahomes was a 1st rounder so he has that 5th year option doesn't he?

Well I mean it really can't go up too much more considering rumors are saying he wants $40M so lets say he settles for $35M...in the next year that price tag isn't going up from 35-40M anyway.

Signing the franchise tag in 2020 and 2021 would save the Cowboys quite a bit of money against their cap and that it's not like in 2022 that salary will be going past $40M/year. His tag would be $26M in 2020, $29M in 2021. It could save them anywhere from $9-14M in 2020 and anywhere from $6-11M in 2021 if indeed he does want that $35-40M contract a year. If he does accept the $30M, just go ahead and get that done now though imo, the money won't be too much different.

The 2020 Franchise Tag is not set yet, and it's expected to be right around 30M.

Well... why?
The Cardinals traded him pretty much because they really liked Murray; happened to have the #1 overall pick so if they wanted him, they merely had to pick him, no guesswork. No point in having a QB competition that is a farce.

That's really about it from their end.

I was talking Mahomes. According to this Patrick Mahomes he does not have a 5th year option. Of course I could be reading it wrong. Probably not listed because they have not activated it yet.

He was the 10th overall pick. Unless there's some bullshit clause in there his agent somehow snuck in, that the NFL somehow approved, he does indeed have a 5th year option as he was a 1st round pick. You can't pick it up or decline it after year 3, however. It's mostly a moot point though outside of negotiating against said 5th year money as he will be extended on the spot I am guessing.

You may be right and I could just be reading wrong. All of the other rookie deals I looked up all say 4 years only as well and the 5th year option is not listed yet. What I did notice was that according to spotrac all the other people I looked at say Kyler Murray for instance has a note that says 5th year option available but I did not see that on Murray. That could all be semantics though. The fact that Mahomes has a not of 5th year option could very well mean it is available too.

Like I said.....I could very well have misread or misinterpreted.

It's almost certainly an error. The shitstorm that would happen if the 10th overall pick managed to hand wave away the 5th year option would be big, and newsworthy; and journalists are looking for that kinda of shit to megaphone during the dead part of the offseason.

Teams trade up often to 32 or 31 to get the 5th year option for QB's (Jackson, Bridgewater are recent examples). I don't see any way how what you're describing isn't a clerical error. Maybe their database had him in the 2nd or 3rd round and they never remembered to update it, idk.

I'm going to laugh when they roll out the contract and it's something like $6/$240 but the first 5 are guaranteed at $30M avg and then balloon the last non-guaranteed year at $90M. :pound:

Then everyone's head explodes because everyone is wrong. It is "average 40m" while also not.

Yeah that's confusing since they don't line item list it, but there is a sub-bullet saying there is a 5th year option. I think all 1st rounders get that 5th year option.

This is correct. Don't think the NFL would even approve a rookie contract from a 1st rounder that didn't stipulate a 5th year option. That would cause chaos- especially if the 10th overall pick did it.

He has the 5th year option as the CBA states it MUST be included and the player CAN NOT negotiate the option.
