Chili Peppers were so overrated, that they wear out the word

REM had some good songs but were too gay

Agree on the Chili Peppers

BUT, Boston had one good album in the fucking 70s

Fuck them

I understand that, but when I saw them live, they weren't just good, they were perfect. The best technical musicians and singer together I ever saw. Not a missed note, not a beat half off, not the slightest feedback or missed chord. Not a bloody missed note. Inhumanly perfect.

That said, only the 1st album was something. The other 2 were like trying to redo the first.

It's problematic that mine was the first vote for TP& tHeaetbreakers.

Not really, everyone loved Petty but was that really the best American band of all time? Eh...

I think it's more problematic that The Doors have but one vote.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band isn’t even an option? So I went with Tom Petty.

They’re not that good.

When I go to see a concert live, I don’t want a perfect reproduction of the studio version. Give me something raw, with some emotion. Your anecdote is a knock against them, IMO.

I picked Other...
Just to give Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention a write in vote. They are definitely more than worthy for the list, imho.

That being said: As far as the choices in the poll goes...

It's a toss up for me between, The Grateful Dead & CCR...
...With a no doubt honorable mention for The Doors.

Also:
Talking Heads, Velvet Underground & The Pixies should've made this list....

.....but I digress...

From the list alone -- The Doors (Chicago with the HM)
Most musically talented band, it's a three way tie -- Weather Report, Return To Forever, Pat Metheny Group

Edit: I think Santana should be on the list, too. JMO

Journey is actually a pretty decent choice if you're thinking mostly of the old Journey

The original line up of Neil Schon, Greg Rolie, Anysley Dunbar, and Ross Valory was spectacular on the eponymous, Journey album, back in '75.

We'd have to do a separate poll for the jazz/fusion/soul/r&b greats..

And btw..
Steely Dan should be on any best american bands list imho.

Yep...their 1st 3 albums are awesome....and even their 4th (1st w/ Steve Perry ) is pretty good....but after that, not so much.
