Nirvana was instrumental to music in their era. Kurt was a genius imo. NIN would be on my list Reznor was something special. Helped a lot of bands too like rammstein. A lot of options The Cure would be up toward the top imo. They don’t always get the attention tho.

Couldn’t have been easy to narrow down the list. Prince, Chris Cornell... great thread no’s :suds:
I got nothing against some Nirvana love, but taking the subjective part or music out, Pearl Jam is a far better band. And it would be them and/or Soundgarden that the average person thinks of when they think of grunge if Cobain didn’t go out when and how he did.

BTW … a little love here for Heart. I would have them in third place nipping on CCR's heels.

When I go to see a concert live, I don’t want a perfect reproduction of the studio version. Give me something raw, with some emotion. Your anecdote is a knock against them, IMO.
Believe me, I've heard that, this wasn't that, which is why I called it perfect. Steve Vai who I've also seen is that. The best technical guitarist I've ever seen, but he sounds like a machine. Boston's performance had emotion, and perfection.

From the list alone -- The Doors (Chicago with the HM)
Most musically talented band, it's a three way tie -- Weather Report, Return To Forever, Pat Metheny Group

Edit: I think Santana should be on the list, too. JMO
Santana is under the genre Illegal Immigrant Rock. :)

I don't know how to answer this, there are so many ways to look at "Best"
What are you going for with "Best"???

For Example:
Sheer amount of recorded quality material albums & bootleg - The Grateful Dead
Most good songs and no real suck songs - The Eagles
Songs I LIKE the best - The Doors
Most American sound - CCR
Best technical musicians - Boston
Band that everybody and his brother loves - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Best Show (not music) - KISS
Best look - ZZ Top
Most gay incomprehensible lyrics - Nirvana
Most powerful voice - Journey

I just saw something the other day that there are a lot of people who believe Kurt Cobain was transgender. I’ve never really thought about it but apparently a decent amount of people subscribe to it.

That doesn’t bother me either way, but grunge just isn’t my scene

Not sure who to vote for in this particular list. There are groups that I like better but too few other people would agree that they're "the best"

Also, my opinion on what an American band sounds like is probably different from many of yours.

On this list, the quintessential "American Band" is probably Guns N' Roses...they had a distinctive sound, heavily guitar-driven, tremendous vocal talent in Axl Rose, widespread appeal among popular music listeners. But they don't have the longevity of some other groups listed, and I'm not sure how many top-rated songs they put out compared to other groups. (which may not matter, CCR NEVER had a billboard #1 song)

I like the Doors better, from a music standpoint, but they are not universally liked and a chunk of their catalog is just weird...it's kind of rock, but not quite rock. A couple other groups like Styx and REO Speedwagon were great technical musicians but not as popular with the headbanger crowd, and their songs often felt more like pop instead of rock. The Allmans' were awesome but I put Southern Rock in a different category. Tom Petty's music often sounds country-influenced.

And Grunge is not Rock. Sorry.

@TheDayMan

Surprised you didn't go with RHCP?
I probably thought about it too much... Figure Pearl Jam is more consistent and pound for pound ‘better’.

Either way it has to be an alternative band. Eff the Eagles.

Also, Eagles music makes me wanna slit my wrists. Little more than a glorified lounge act

I picked Other...
Just to give Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention a write in vote. They are definitely more than worthy for the list, imho.

That being said: As far as the choices in the poll goes...

It's a toss up for me between, The Grateful Dead & CCR...
...With a no doubt honorable mention for The Doors.

Also:
Talking Heads, Velvet Underground & The Pixies should've made this list....

.....but I digress...

Talking Heads were on the list but nobody had even said a word about them so they were replaced, I actually thought about putting Velvet Underground on the list.
