I have to say if you are the Astros, you can't blame them. They want to be champions again. And any adult in the room knows winning a WS back to back or within a few years is like lightning striking twice. Seems Boston is the only team recently that comes close. And you never know when you are going to get back to the dance again. So the Astros go big now for it all knowing arbitrations are coming. It was a drop in the bucket to give up what they did in minor league talent.

I'm just shocked the Yankees were not more aggressive. Their starting rotation has been a revolving IL. Cashman seemed to be all in to make this year a Yankees WS win. It's been 10 years since their last trip to the dance and winning it all. For a huge market team and grand history that's sad. So the only way they are going to get there is to continue bashing balls over the fence. That won't last in the playoffs.

One of the most important aspects of this trade is Grienke is under contract for several more seasons and Cole is a FA after this year......So it not only helps them this year, it pays dividens for several years to come.

At least the Greinke trade makes a dent in the Astros farm system and takes them out of the running for Cole.

It still stings tho. Greinke will be an Astro for a good long while.

Supposedly both Greinke and Minor had blocked the Yankees as a trade destination. The Yankees focused their efforts on trying to get ray from the diamondbacks. The Astros were willing to pay up for Greinke and the Yankees weren’t for ray.

It will cost them some big bucks. Not sure how that will impact their salary structure. And he is 35.

FWIW, Hitzges thinks the pitcher we picked up will be in our rotation next season.

OH.....The Astros just picked up Grienke!
He probably will be. Just like Sampson and Jurado are this season. There are doubts that he will be able to remain a starter in the big leagues.

I am not going to look up the salaries of Cole vs Grienke, but if Cole goes elsewhere, and with $24 mil being eaten by AZ, then surely they'll save money on this........Yeah, he's 35. But he's pitching terrific. Sure, chances are that will change over the years, just like it does for all athletes. Us too for that matter, eh? ha ha ha

But there's no reason to think - from an Astros perspective (hate doing this) - he won't be good for at least another season or two.

This may be the most distasteful post I've ever made.

It should be well past that before we ever have a chance to catch the Astros. I am all for the Astros beefing up for the next 2 or 3 years if it hurts them 4 or 5 years down the road. Although, I have my doubts that the present regime will ever catch the Astros.

They sure haven’t shown an inkling to catch them.

No longer fools gold. After today, appears to be ageing management. Changes are needed to put pieces in place in order to compete and that is first priority now.

I don't think management is capable of doing that.
