That's not loyalty. That's the price they paid for acquiring the player's services as determined by the players demand in the marketplace. If they didn't pay them that guarantee contract the team would have lost out to another team. The team isn't being loyal, they are just conducting business.

Its a business, which includes and allows the player to be traded, because he agreed to those terms when he signed it.

Wiggy's intent was pointing out that owners are held to contractual standards at having to hand out millions of dollars because of guaranteed contracts. Regardless of said player's health or performance during said contract.

For me, I believe that while the player should be able to request a trade from his current situation, dictating where he goes limits the potential return for the team that he's being traded from. The organization shouldn't be penalized for the predicament.

Just feel like if you want out of a bad situation that's fine. But you're also a value asset and that can't just be magically waived away.

I tend to see the opposite side of this.

I want as much information as possible if I am dealing for a star.

Sure, Toronto won a title last year and they were not going anywhere with the DeRozan core. Getting Kawhi was clearly worth the risk for them.

But those situations are kind of rare.

If Anthony Davis merely asks to be traded, but doesn’t specify where he has interest in resigning, maybe Ainge gives up everything to get him. Then he loses Davis next year in FA.

Yes, these lists that players make surely do limit the return value that the franchise dealing the disgruntled star can return, but to me, that is a lot less franchise crushing than overpaying for a 1 year rental if the other team does not know if they have a legit chance to resign him.

Specific team trade requests provide the market with more information. And I want as much info as possible before making a blockbuster trade.

The contract is a mutual decision.
Name me any time an owner didn’t honor one.

I am going to play devils advocate here for a second.

Anthony Davis, for example, absolutely honored his contract.

He asked to be traded because he made his decision that he wasn't signing long term and wanted to play in a big market. The games that he missed last season were because the Pelicans chose to sit him out. Not because he refused to play.

So even though he caused a ton of drama, the reality is that Davis’ actions helped the Pelicans tremendously. Because:

A) they were going to miss the playoffs anyway last year
B) Davis’ request allowed them to tank which helped them land the #1 pick
C) they were able to trade him for a pretty good haul of future assets

Now, had he said something like:

“I am not going to play until you guys trade me”

That would be not honoring the contract.

A trade request is not the same thing. A trade request actually helps the team by giving them information as to how to proceed with their franchise star. It is usually much worse when they decide to walk away with no warning like LeBron or KD.
