The owners want the 18 game schedule with 2 preseason games. All of the problems have been mentioned in the previous replies.

The league is having a problem with the 16 game thing because there will be a problem with who and how the 2 games off will be ochestrated. Will the head coach determinewho gets a game off? Will players be able to pick two games off? Will the league determine how that's done by speifically saying that certain positions must take certain Sundays off? What happens if all of the players want the same Sunday off? What if all of the Jets don't want to fly to LA and play the Chargers?

Worse, the owners are trying to get 18 games and not have to pay the players for them. If this thing flies, the league will have to redo every contract and the NFLPA won't allow it without compensation which means that the salary cap will have to be adjusted or done away with.

If it ain't broke, don't fuck with it.

well so much of this makes any sense.
Players never get any say on when who or when they play. (well except maybe Rodgers LOL) If they could only play 16 out of 18 games they wouldnt get any say in that (barring faking injury)
I mean I get your concern, but most of what you just posted is bullshit LOL.

For which the nflpa would never allow. The players are adamantly against playing more.
Are they against it if a pay raise is included?

What if the NFL proposed game check raise plus additional 1% gross revenue?

Gotta remember money talks and everybody has a price.

I'll say this a full 18 game season lessens the chances of the Sean Lee's and Carson Wentz's playing full seasons.

I’m sure you’ll get more players onboard. But it’s the player reps that you gotta convince. Those guys are very outspoken about player safety.

Money always talks though.

Bullshit.

NFL viewer ratings are what they are because of fantasy football and gambling.

Bars don't survive without alcoholics. Strip clubs don't survive without perverts. McDonalds doesn't survive without fat people. The modern NFL as we know it wouldn't survive without fantasy football and gamblers.

FF and gambling have certainly helped ratings, but the NFL doesn't 'need' it. It's simply made the rich, richer.

Union reps must let the members vote.

The NFL would be smarter just adding more playoff teams, thus more playoff games than this thought of an 18 game season.

Probably already mentioned but what if 2 evenly matched teams are fighting all season long in the same division and 1 game here or there can determine winning the div or possibly missing the play-offs altogether. How do these idiots justify to their fans sitting out their best players? Honestly, it seems absolutely no thought went into this idea.

I don't believe it. Fake news.

It's way too asinine of an idea to be a real proposal.

This is just a bargaining chip.
Posturing for negotiations has just begun.....

Commissioner confirms NFL wants new CBA by start of regular season
My guess is the proposal was made for negotiating purposes only, so they could put together hypothetical scenarios about how many/much players would get paid, that sort of thing. Both sides are smart enough to know there are too many problems with this to have any practical chance of working.

Yep. Just sayin that most player reps are chosen to lead & make these decisions for the rest. I’m sure if the right amount of money was involved they’d all be singing a different tune.

Fantasy Football will survive if this happens. In fact with the roller coaster ways, I am sure in time it would become even more, with the complications in the game. Gambling. There would be even more for gamblers to bet on. This would end up a non issue.

But it's gonna taint numbers, stats, records, it's a slap to the face of the history of the game... I"m all or logical change, but this is just dumb... I like the pre season, I like watching young players try to make the roster, it gives the coaches a chance to evaluate guy's on the bubble.. Why does the NFL need 18 games ? Is it desperate for more money ?

Union reps just represent the workforce decisions. They cannot vote either way with out the players go ahead.

According to Andrew Beaton of the Wall Street Journal, NFL owners have proposed an 18-game regular season with a caveat that no player would be allowed to compete in more than 16 games.
The NFLPA has been reluctant to stretch the regular season beyond its current 16-game schedule due to injury concerns, but putting a cap on how many games a player can suit up for would be a fair compromise. Per Beaton, extending the regular season by two games could increase league revenue by $2.5 billion while potentially adding $15 million to each team's salary cap. Choosing when to sit players would also add an interesting layer to coaching decisions. It's unclear how much (if any) traction this idea has, but it's not the worst idea the NFL has ever come up with.

18 game season with a 16 game player limit just sounds like it's going to wind up being a big mess and leaving unsatisfied.

Can you imagine your team being bounced by the playoffs because another team was able to sneak in by beating up a team that had their starting QB and other starters benched?

Or your team having to sit guys in a critical game because of the games limit?

People want to see teams field the best unit they can every week and not have to sit guys for a game limit rule.

I'd rather neither but between playoff expansion or an 18 game season I'd rather see playoff expansion.

Honestly, I believe this is kind of a trojan horse. Get to 18 games, and then after a season or two of the 16 game max, the competitive nature of the players will take over and the limit will be eliminated.

Bottom line is that the owners want 18 games... So what can they give back to make it happen? Obviously rosters would need to be expanded. If you give each team 10 more roster spots, suddenly you have 320 additional players. Gotta think those players on the bubble would appreciate that.

NBC Sports' Peter King reports the NFL and the NFLPA have taken "baby steps" toward a new collective bargaining agreement.
There have already been three negotiating sessions for the agreement which does not end until after the 2020 season, and a fourth is scheduled as the NFL pushes to get something done this year. That does not mean, however, that a deal is close. According to King, the players want a bigger piece of the revenue pie to get a deal done early, and the proposed 18-game season is a non-starter. There is still a long way to go in this saga.
