Seems like all this would do is extend preseason into the first 2 games of the regular season. No one is going to risk depending on the back ups at the end of the season.

Bad idea any way you look at it.
well you are thinking like a fan.
NFL & Owners are thinking with their wallets.

Watering down your product never ends well... just stupid

IMO, watering it down would be expanding to 40 teams or something... Two more regular season games and one additional bye week sounds great to me.

Indeed but I'd imagine coaches hate it too. It makes it challenging to coach too and adds an unwanted layer. A team desperate for wins is probably going to run their starters at you if you are playing your backups at key positions.

Yep.
Definitely makes a twist throughout the season. but honestly most are getting upset about sitting the star players. That really wouldnt be my concern. Most of those players end up with a week or two off due to a nagging injury or sitting at end of season to be fresh for playoffs.

The lineman are the ones I would be concerned with sitting.
We went to a back up LT once & Dak got sacked like 6 times from that spot.
So just wait until you have an inferior lineman in the line up & that ends your QBs season.
No one is even thinking about that.
QB/RB/WRs & such. Finding a spot to sit them isnt as big as a problem to me as OL. Like I said a ton of those positions dont make it 16 starts anyways.

I'm fine with 18 and play all 18, 18 and play 16, or 18 and play less than 16. From a purely business point of view it doesn't make sense for the NFL putting so much money into stadia and getting so little use out of them. I'd be ok with a 20 game season with a 14 game maximum per player.

That would be terrible for fantasy football.

I'm sorry, but on a fantasy perspective, 16 game limits in a 18 game season would cause so much confusion during fantasy playoffs when teams decide when to play their starters.

actually that already happens if your players are on a Playoff team. Now it would just happen throughout the season instead of just at the end.

So you’d be happy watching 2 games of your favorite team’s backup qb?

Vs. your team not playing at all that week.
Sure. it is an even playing field since all teams would have to do that.

Not sayin I wouldn’t watch. Just stating a simple fact that it’s a dilution of the product just to increase exposure.

I agree. It would dilute it, but I would have a bigger problem with players playing more than 16 games myself.
so either leave it at 16 game season which at some point in the next ten years will change to more games now that the ball is rolling on this subject, or have players sit & rest some games.

So as a fan you would be fine in buying tickets ahead of time and then going to a game and they announce the day of Gurley, Goff, Woods and Donald will not be playing but they are healthy...they have to sit due to only being able to play a max 14 or 16 games. Honestly, that sounds like an awful idea and a problem.
Firstly when you buy a ticket that ticket is for 'the game' and does not have any 'money back guarantee' if XYZ doesn't play. You don't know who will play when you buy the ticket. Secondly my first post already answered your question. It makes more financial sense to have more games played out over a longer season. If a limit on playing time was a compromise needed to get the change through then I would be ok with it, just as i'd be ok with the players playing 20 games if they agreed to it.

I don't want to get into the intricacies of how a limit would work, (number of games, quarter, or snap count) in this thread since the NFL proposal is still at an early stage. However, most sports, including the NFL, work to playing time limits of some sort, although mostly unofficial. In the English Premier League almost none of the players play in all 38 games. Most top EPL teams rotate heavily. In the NBA starters don't play ever minute of every game. In the NFL starting D-Linemen are only playing around 65% of snaps. There are ways and means to limit playing time and modern NFL offenses shouldn't need QBs and OL to play every-single-snap just as the NFL hasn't required them to play iron-man on defense for the last 40+ years.

The game will evolve.

Out of curiosity let me reverse the question back to you. If the NFL changed to an 18 game season with 16 game limits for players would you stop buying your season ticket or tv pass/package in advance?

Some people like fantasy football and some don't. Football doesn't need fantasy football just as it doesn't need gambling, pick'ems, or survivor games. Football should be run for its own benefit. Anything using football as a food source will have to adapt.

I have an interest in gambling, pick'ems, and survivor, but no interest in FF. From my zero experience and limited knowledge of FF there are versions that include individual defensive players so there might be defense only leagues (?). Such leagues would already be subject to huge weekly swings as defensive player snap counts can vary wildly based on opponent and score.

Has there been any discussion about increasing roster sizes too?

I don't believe it. Fake news.

It's way too asinine of an idea to be a real proposal.

Dont know, but I assume you would have too.
Id be cool with that! Always feels like so much talent goes to waste in this league by not getting the correct opportunities.

I prefer the bye week over two extra games full of backups.

Besides teams will have to really over man rosters as on scrub play days, who are the reserves?

I'd think every and I do mean every position would require 3 players.
3 QBs
6 RBs
3 TE's
I haven't a clue how many WR's
15 OL-men. OK Maybe not that many but I think you get my point.
