This is obviously a tougher question than it's been for the past couple of years. Technically, we're still in the hunt for a postseason spot. Realistically tho, I see our chances as quite slim to all but none. There are simply too many good teams ahead of us in the standings, and a few of these clubs seem to be getting better as the season progresses. We'd have to go on one hell of a second half run to place ourselves in the thick of it.

So, does this mean we're back to our last few years of selling off existing talent for some future hopefuls? And if so, who would we trade that could bring us a quality prospect or two? I don't see Hahn & co giving up anyone worth trading at this point. I think we're too far along the rebuild to continue going down that road.

Buyers perhaps? I doubt that too, altho I did read a suggestion on one of the Sox sites that one possible trade may not cost us much. The Giants might be willing to dump our old pal Jeff Samardzija in exchange for a mid level prospect or two, altho they would likely have to eat as least some of that huge salary of his. He has a no trade clause and there's nothing out there indicating which of those teams would be on that list. Maybe we're one of them, who knows. I do know if there is any possibility of this, I sure hope it wouldn't take more than what has been suggested. Otherwise, he's not worth it.

Guess I'm in the standing pat camp. Let's see what this current group can do the rest of the year. I would LOVE to see us go after Cole or Oridizzi in the offseason to bolster a very weak starting corps. And then wait for more of the young talent to get healthy, develop and come up the ranks.

We are doing nothing this go-round. Fans are complacent holding the perception that we're on the cusp for next season, so there's no pressure on management. The playoffs are not realistically attainable with us 7 back of a WC spot needing to leap 5 other teams (one of which is the Red Sox). We're literally in "wait til next year" mode on all fronts.

I would trade Colome if we can get a AAA top 60-70 prospect (ideally, a rotational starter) who can help us by next season.

Even a guy like Erick Fedde who has already pitched in the big leagues could be in play. Especially seeing as Colome has another year of control left. At this point, Abreu isn't going anywhere. Bummer might be another guy we get a lot of offers on.

I doubt we just stand completely pat and we're certainly not buyers. Even if we came out of the gate scorching hot, wound up 50-45 and only 2.5 GB of the wild card 10-11 days from now. I don't think we compromise anything that would stand even a remote chance of hurting us in the early 2020's.

I like what you said here, but the one caveat is I would demand a top 30 or better prospect for Colome. Now your first reaction would likely be that's too much value to give up for even a really good closer with a year plus left on his contract. I'd even tend to agree with you, but that's also my point. If I'm the Sox GM and if some team really needs Colome's services, then they'll need to pony up and overpay, otherwise we'll be more than happy to stand pat. I think we're in the driver's seat on that one.

Whattaya think Reynaldo Lopez would fetch? Some spare change and a handful of pocket lint?

Unfortunately, at this point, that's about it - maybe if the other team threw in a ham sandwich to clinch the deal.

There would likely be someone willing to take him on as a project. Live arm, good movement, still young and performed admirably in his first two seasons. With a couple periods of resembling a legit mid-rotational starter. You would get SOMETHING.

But yeah... You're talking about a very low return. Nothing that likely contributes. We're better off trying to take him on as our own reclamation project. I think it's about time we move that project to Charlotte, though. I'd almost rather roll Detwiler out there every 5 days.

Lopez would be the epitome of selling low. Poor time to trade him.

My first guess is Sox stand pat. You can make an argument for an acquisition of some sort. I'm curious if Colomé will be traded. I hope they keep him, personally.

He will definitely get back to what we saw last year, and hopefully better. Wouldn't be surprised if his poor pitching of late was due to mental issues, as he has said.

I really hope you're right. This kid seems to be a Jekyll & Hyde when it comes to his pitching thruout each season. He's the poster child of inconsistency. He needs to get it going and get it going soon.

Kind of reminds me of how I feel about Rodon too.

Oh, no doubt. I was just saying that I think somebody with a pitching coach that has an impeccable track record would be willing to give SOMETHING for him. In hopes of a reclamation. That's all.

He looks horrendous, though. He really does.

Some of his past success was also a bit of a mirage. He had an incredible amount of luck during those time frames when he was going strong. A lot of contact, a lot of hard contact, etc.

I am beginning to lose faith entirely. It's bad

For the life of me, I can’t think of anyone that a contender would want enough to give up young prospects that the Sox would be willing to deal. Giolito, moancada, and Jimenez are untouchable.

I wish message boards were a thing back in 1997 because I'd go find you somebody saying the same thing about Jaime Navarro. Let's not slide down that f*cking hill again. Dude sucks. We don't need 2 more seasons to figure it out. "His problem is mental issues..." I think this is one of those "You do realize what you just said is an indictment and not an excuse, right?" moments.

You’d get nothing if you traded him right now.

I think the guy's ERA is something like 8 outside of games vs the Indians/Royals/Tigers/Blue Jays...The worst scoring teams in the league are the only thing keeping him in the 6 range.

I'll take less than nothing.

No doubt he has been awful. I imagine Hahn sends him to Charlotte as a result.
