You need to ask yourself, would you trade for Sale? Nuff said

If Boston knew then what they know now, I can't imagine they make that trade again. Seems like the White Sox GM knew something that everyone else did not.

K's also run up a pitch count. Randy Johnson said one of the keys to the second half dominance of his career was his willingness to take fly ball outs instead of always pushing for strikeouts. It's really hard to go 8-9 innings with a high strikeout total.

Given the Red Sox bullpen woes, Alex Cora would probably prefer to have Sale get a few less K's if he can give him another scoreless inning.

That’s the case some of the time.

But the elite strikeout guys a lot of times are so good they get them quickly. So they still can go deep.

Then there are guys like Jake Odorizzi with 8 more Ks to innings pitched. He’s got announcers talking about how many swings and misses he gets with his fast ball. But they fail to mention every K comes after 4 foul balls. And the guy rarely ever goes 7.

Some pitchers master the art of the K. Others are just good enough to eventually get them.

He went 7 and gave up 1 run and left with the lead. I'm not gonna put this one on him. This one is on the pen.

Definitely on the pen. But Cora knew before he took Sale out that his bullpen is bad. His team needed 8 or 9 IP and he could only give them seven.

He's not the reason they lost. But he's also a main reason they didn't win.

And Chris Sale is not just your "average" starter. So comparing him with the entirety of MLB is assuming that Sale is just your average player.

I would expect that to really do this comparison fairly, he should be compared against the other players in the league who are considered the elite.

How do his IP/Start compare to guys like Verlander, Scherzer, Giolito, Montas, Ryu, Greinke, Castilla, etc? That's the number we ought to be looking for.
easy!

overall, sale averages 6.00 exactly per start. that includes a 3 IP and 4 IP start ion his first 4. but in his last 10 hes 6.78 per start.

verlander - 6.64 IP per start overall, last 10 he's at 7 IP per start on the nose.

scherzer - 6.58 per start overall, last 10 he's 6.52 IP per start

gioloto - 6.25 IP/start overall, last 10 hes 6.4 or so IP per start

these are based on per inning as a whole, not in 3rds.

It is working so far, but it sure would be nice to have a solid innings eater to give the pen a break once in a while

Yeah, even the best of pens will eventually get tired. The Yanks are something like 2-6 in their last 8 and the pen has over an 8 era in that time. Between double headers due to rain, injuries to the starters, using an opener a couple of times and Paxton coming off injury and only going 4 in his first start back they got gassed.

Why do you keep talking only about his last ten starts? He has 14 starts. Not 10.

granted Moncado looks elite, but I would trade a package of prospects for an established star anytime, depending on contract status. No rentals.

The Orioles comped me with 2 standing room tickets. You guys gonna be there? Would painting your chests be too much to ask?

No can do, still recovering from the Memorial Day weekend camping trip and a lot of the nail marks on my upper body probably shouldn't be covered with paint.

Back to Sale. Verlander, unless he totally tanks, should get the start. It's about star power and Sale is 2nd tier in my estimation

its a statistically valid sample size for recent performance, so i did it for all. you can see a trend in IP/start. its also why i kinda spelled it out for you in my last post. he had a 3 IP and 4 IP fart early on.

sales been REALLY good in his last 10.

i know it doesnt fit your narrative, sorry.

Agreed. But damaged goods is what Boston seems to have gotten.
