I can only think of 1 QB from that 80's that was also 6-0. He was 6-2 in the playoffs, won a S.B. & finsihed 30 games above .500 (77-47) before an injury ended his career. And Brees is much better.

Even if Brees played in the 80's he's too talented of a QB not have had some success back then in my opinion.

Which one of these vaulted Brees into the elite QB he's become, exactly?

There were no major rule 'changes' for the 2004 season, but there is no question that rule enforcements greatly altered the passing game going into that season. Not debatable.

As for Rodgers....he's the best QB in the game today, and has been since he established himself as the generational talent he is. Greatest ever? I haven't seen a guy on Joe Montana's level yet, but Rodgers may be the closest since #16 retired. The only other guy I would say comes as close is Dan Marino.

Neither QB threw for 4,000 yards in a season before the changes in '04. And Brady had better talent around him in NE than Brees had in SD.

What about your comment that if Brees played in the 80's nobody would have heard of him? Not many examples of successful 6 foot QB's but was able to think of one.

The problem with these debates is I think we are confusing greatness with accomplished. Meaning, Tom Brady is by far the most accomplished quarterback to ever play the game. Whereas greatness I put into the more talent, physical abilities, athletic type category. Hell with a guy like Peyton we could even add a thing category of intelligient. No one was ever going to accuse Peyton of being Athletic, but he was damn sure the smartest qb I've ever seen play the game. Best case scenario, you make a top 5 off all three categories and see who shows up the most on the three.
