Great win for him today but he caught some breaks because of the weather. The changed format put him in the final group and the wind definitely put a premium on experience vs power. He won because he deserved to win and he's definitely a top 10 player with a shot every week but these tournaments are ridiculously hard to win with the distance that most of the field gets off the tee.

I think at most courses that's the case. The Masters is usually better from approach to cup. That's why I love it because is balances out the DJ/Rory bombers with the Speith/older Tiger guys. You run way more risk as a long hitter and many of them never come close to being able to get out of trouble like Tiger.

Just a great tournament.

I completely disagree and think the strength of today's field is at least half due to exposure to the game thanks to Tiger. None of these dudes were alive when Jack was prime. Hell I'm 38 and only remember Jack on the back end of his career.

I was referring to the present day with that. I get that he inspired many a golfer during his peak. But that's the past and I don't think he'll have the same effect today.

Go look at ratings and ticket sales with and without Tiger. He moves the needle unlike any other. Facts hurt some of these old farts that stopped paying attention after Jack.

Yep

97 and 01 the tv ratings were nearly a 13

in 04 Tiger was out of it and the Masters was barely a 7. The following year he wins and it bounces up to 10.5

I will give Phil some props for his rivalry with Tiger for his win in 10 (Tiger top 5) and then the last time it topped a ten was in 13 when Tiger had a good season and was in contention.

Even with the influx of strong talent it hasn't topped 9 since.

I imagine this year may top 97/01

He's also great if you go to tournaments because you can see all the other studs up close because the vast majority only follow Tiger. I got my peeks at the GOAT at the Players this year then followed the young guys.

No one gave a shit about the ratings pre-Tiger. So why does everyone always point to ratings as a barometer for how well, or not well, golf is doing now that Tiger is "back"? Or before he was "back"?

That's been my point this whole time.

He's not the GOAT. Stop being so damned lazy!

I'm 39 and a golf historian. What Nicklaus has accomplished is incredible.

Im not shading Jack at all. I'm pretty sure Tiger has said Jack was his inspiration. Just saying Tiger has taken the torch for the game.

I'm not a huge golf fan otherwise if not for Tiger and betting lol. I do like Koepka. He's probably my favorite other than Tiger.

Golf was a fraction of what it was pre-Tiger. Arnie did a lot but Tiger took the sport to a new level. It's undeniable unless you're simply just an asshurt hater.

He could get the follicles tatted on if I was a black and or mixed dude I'd consider it

A great accomplishment for someone who would "never win another major".

As for the Tiger v Jack argument. Tiger has not accomplished what Jack did. But Tiger is still playing. Will be interesting to see if this satisfies or propells him.

That's both a good thing and a bad thing. The game definitely expanded with the Tiger Boom but the post-boom has been miserable for people trying to make a living in the game (store owners, club pro's, courses, ...). I live by one of the busiest courses in the state and it's bleeding money. Mismanagement has a lot to do with it but the Tiger Bust also has a lot to do with it. Viewership is a big deal but there's another much bigger aspect to big expansion/contraction swings.

Agree with that. He made courses busier and dildos with 20 caps pretend to line up like they're Tiger. It's still a net positive.

I stayed on the 18th green at Augusta last year on Sunday after the final group teed off on 1. It's crazy how thick the crowd would get as Tiger was getting within a hole or two. Then the crowd would disappear after he was gone. This was with him nowhere near contention.

I saw him at the Players at his lowest point. When he doubled 2 after smacking a tree and landing about 100 yards from the tee box. The only time I ever got to stand 5 feet from the GOAT. Forget that shit ever happening again.

It's beyond argument that he's great for the game by any reasonable definition. Before Tiger (97) the most money ever won in a year was $1.7 million. Since 1999 the top money winner has averaged roughly $8 million, with the lowest amount for a leading money winner being $5 million. That's all due to Tiger.
