Hey I think I have the perfect solution to the OT rule

Everything remains the same EXCEPT if the first team to possess the ball scores a TD, they must kick the extra point. Then the other team gets one shot to score a TD but if they do, they MUST go for two, meaning the game would end one way or the other right then. If the first team to score happened to miss the extra point, then the second team would be able to kick the PAT for the win. If both teams miss the PAT, then the next score wins.

Thoughts?

Interesting. I say make 'em go for 2 anyway, even if the first team misses the XP.

that is similar to one of my ideas when this was an actual topic... I am pretty content with the rules as is...

Only reason I would allow the kick is that the NFL is looking for a way to limit the OT possessions. If a team misses a PAT, they can't claim they were cheated if the other team hits theirs.

but the idea I liked the most, was to keep it as it was original(first team to score anything), but take away the coin toss... Have the Home team ALWAYS get the ball first...

This would add strategy at the end of the 4th quarter of a game...

Or...let the game continue from wherever it ended...meaning, if the game ended tied with one team in possession off the ball, 2nd and 8 from their own 42...the OT picks up from right there

I don't mind the rules as is but it definitely would make it interesting and would let both teams have a chance in OT every time.

Here's my solution to the OT rules: Make it a Soccer/Hockey style shootout where each team gets 5 offensive possessions. You would have different yardage markers for each of the 5 possessions. For example...

1st Possession: Ball spotted on 1 yard line.
2nd Possession: Ball spotted on 3 yard line.
3rd Possession: Ball spotted on 5 yard line.
4th Possession: Ball spotted on 10 yard line.
5th Possession: Ball spotted on 15 yard line.

You can elect to either go for the TD or FG on any possession, no PAT's.

This would challenge each offense and defense for all of their preparations, short yardage, intermediate, long distance and even FG's.

Teams who miss out on some of the early possessions can still make it up with the long distance possessions to go for TDs. Teams that are ahead can elect to go for FG's to play it safe.

It would be a really interesting chess match between the teams and really imo showcase which team is indeed better.

If for some reason the score is tied after the 5 possessions, OT repeats with possessions at the 5 yard line, until one team wins.

That seems like a lot of fun but I feel like that is too much work for the refs...I mean they can't even this call right

Well nothing is ever going to be perfect. They could easily screw up calls anyways throughout the course of a game as we have seen. No different in OT, but at least in my example if you get screwed on one play, you can still make it up.
