The Rose Bowl is perhaps the only Bowl that it doesn't really matter if they are part to the play-offs or not. It is the Mecca of College football (yes even the Rose Bowl haters will have to admit that)

Plus it has something no other Bowl has … it has a lead end that is watched around the entire world, every year, the Rose Bowl Parade...

In the real world terms … the playoffs need the Rose Bowl, --- the Rose Bowl does not need the playoffs...

If I was a marketing person for the NCAA College Football --- I would start working around New Years Day as my finale … That day was made for College football.

I am sure both played major parts in it. Also is Monday night the right time for a college championship game?

They should just back the games up so the final occurs on New Year's.

Agree with the statement about Monday night being a stupid day for the Title Game. What idiot came up with that brilliant idea? Doesn’t basketball do the same?

I put a question mark there. We have the recruited talent. Are consistently winning 10 games. I don't think it's unreasonable to include us in a group of a few schools below Alabama and Clemson. There aren't many teams outside of that who are even able to compete talent-wise.
I was screwing with you. Its offseason, take a break.

Monday Night is the stupidest night out of everything you can pick.

Saturday. This final game needs to be played on Saturday.
The reason it’s not on Saturday is because that overlaps with the wildcard round of the NFL playoffs. Same with Sunday.

This is why it's complete bull shit when people say espn has an SEC agenda. If anything this should get rid of that myth. People bitching about how some people at ESPN thought UGA should get and claiming it espn bias. No that's just who they think should have gotten in. It does them no good to promote two teams from one conference, because the ratings dip.

But yet people will say they have an agenda. Doesn't make any sense to me.

You do realize that ESPN owns the SEC Network?

In the Retail business and the restaurant business the slowest
night of the week is Monday night.

Everybody stays home on Monday night.

Monday night is the ideal time for the game, to draw a TV audience.

Kickoff time has to take in the 3 time zones for maximum effect.

If you kickoff at 7, that is 4pm on the West Coast. You lose that
crowd. (Not that any of them care. (Maybe some USC fans, but
that would be it).

Ideal KO time would be 8:30 pm EST. That would be 530 PST,
630 MST & 730 CST.

The east would be over around 1130 pm.

I posted it and I think someone else did within existing threads. Probably deserves its own.

The Rose Bowl is on New Year's Day in which a lot more people are off of work, along with the favorable time of day in which it's played so that people on the east coast can watch the game and still get a good night's sleep before work on the 2nd. Much like Saturday games throughout the year. Of course it would have a higher TV rating on average than a Monday night game or a playoff game that would also contend with NFL playoffs.

That spike in ratings for the 2015 game has more to attribute to newness of the playoffs versus the fact OSU was involved. Do you think that if Bama or Clemson was in that game instead of OSU that it would automatically dropped down a couple ratings points?
You skipped over my other comments.

Plus, I believe this past Rose Bowl was the highest rated non playoff game in the playoff era.

People weren't watching Washington

Yes. And you realize ratings are significantly lower when it's two teams from the south in the title game? It's not in the networks best interest to have two sec teams in the title game.

I agree Monday evening is lame, but it’s been on that day for years, so probably doesn’t factor into lower number this year much.

I’d bet the factors mentioned in the OP are are pretty right on. Getting bored with the same teams, from the same region, also more and more people streaming every year like was mentioned.

Not much can be done about it, except other teams get their shit together.

Of course. But in fairness, he’s equally antiSEC in general.

But as to his “point”, if having 2 teams from the same region hurt the ratings, tough shit. Teams from OTHER regions had their shot. Washington lost 3 games. tOSU got raped by 6-7 Purdue. OU and ND lost the semis.

And of course, Texas lost FOUR games. So if fans of those places opted to watch reruns of SVU, fine for them. I didn’t watch the crappy Rose, Sugar, or any of those crappy bowls either. Why? Totally meaningless exhibitions by lesser teams.

Obviously given the current setup I agree tough shit. Gotta take the teams who advance.

But yea I'm definitely suffering from Bama/Clemson fatigue. The first two I was incredibly pumped for...this one not so much.

Yup. CFB needs to change and other teams have to get to that level. But how do you do that? Right now no one looks to even have a shot at getting to their level any time soon. Maybe a few teams like OU, OSU, Mich?, UG? but there's clearly a gap between those two and everyone else.

Game specific issues -- it's on a fricken Monday night at 8pm, and with commercials and everything took FOREVER. I fell asleep during the boring as shit halftime thing.

They have been milking those primetime commercials all year. Did them during Ohio State games also.

Three steps.
1.) Recruit at the same level as they (Bama and Clemson) do. Several already are.
2.) Develop said recruited talent.
3.) Not screw up during the season and lose to bad or middling teams.

IMO they have to be done in that order...and that can be a Catch 22. Not going to get that same level of talent to some locations until a team wins. Not going to win until they get the same level of talent.

So, in reality, only a handful of teams have any real odds of ever getting to that level.

That I understand. I’m just not sure what changes could’ve prevented it. This year, those teams were the top 2 over the season.

If I weren’t a fan of one of them, I probably would feel “fatigue” as well. That said, I watched every BCS title game except 2001 (I was in Antarctica) and oddly 2010 (on a flight back from Manila).

To some degree it separates hard core from casual fans. I realize the networks want ANYONE watching, but as to what actions could be taken I don’t have a good answer.

Alabama and Clemson are in states with relatively low populations. It is what it is.
