Reds picked up reliever Robby Scott from the BoSox today. Bolstering the bullpen always a solid decision. We are still in dire need of starting pitching. A lot of smoke around Reds discussing Puig and Kemp from LAD today, Kemp seems to make more sense for us.

Are you sad about that??? Lordy, Nova is a nothing burger...4.3 ERA and 1.33 WHIP.

so then who are the Pirates going to use that money on??? Pirates need a new shortstop, a real first baseman and a right fielder. Tired of Polanco and his hamstring issues.

Reds snag Tanner Roark from the Nats. Booyaa. Finally, some SP.

The deal with Ivan Nova is that it's better to send him off than eventually try to negotiate a pitcher who won't be worth it when the time comes.

Dealing with the White Sox is going to be trendy for awhile since their farm system has been propped up as quite lucrative. Dunno about the return on the Nova trade but from the Sox perspective, it's worth it. They are trying to become relevant in a division that really only requires nothing more than that.

Reds getting Tanner Roark is a short-term coup but it's nothing more. Anybody was better than the other Tanner, who couldn't even find a spot in the worst pitching staff in the 21st century. Roark will settle in where Harvey was in the rotation. He's gone in 2020. If he gives them 170 innings, it's a gold mine. Speaking of gold ......

Goldschmidt is the 800-pound gorilla for the Cardinals. They can flip Jose Martinez for a relief pitcher ... if I'm the Cubs, I basically panic right now. Gawd, I hope that happens.

I love some competitive NL-C baseball. Anything is better than what we saw in the AL this year.

scouty, How do you feel about the trade we made to get Paul Goldschmidt?
Gave up nothing to get him...one year rental of a stud is OK without giving anything up of value. No problem. I promise you though, he won't be back after next year. And the Cards have quite a few off the books next year...that's the only problem. Start all over again next year.

scouty, I asked you that question only because I know you were sold on our Triple A catcher at Memphis who was in line to be Molina's replacement eventually even though I was never sold on him like you were which was a part of the trade to get Goldschmidt. I realize that Goldschmidt is only a one year rental but the dude has never had a bad year in MLB and I think he has finished up as runner up twice for MVP. I also realize that in a year from now the Cardinals front office has got some work to do to keep us contenders. I like the trade very much and thanks for your answer to my question.

I do like Kelly, but overall, I find this fascination with catchers being so all important as really over hyped. Unless you have a Johnny Bench, catching isn't a position of strife for me...especially if you have a balanced team.

you must not have seen just how bad the cathers position for the Yankees was last season.
That dude was aweful! my guess is that he alone cost his team 7 or 8 wins by giving up so many passed balls or putrid throws into 2nd base!

I think decent defensive catchers are really underrated. But if you are a Cardinals fan, it's ho-hum, I reckon. I will let you chase a pennant with Ramon Cabrera behind the plate.

Hey John, I hope our front office will pass on trying to acquire Cabrera!

So you would have won 107 or 108 games....poor thing. Your hyperbole is great though...you were 17th in DWAR for catching, 14th in DEF, Cards were 22nd and 26th in DEF, and that's with the vaunted Yadi…

Yank's were 4th in DRS for catching...tell me more

Hey John,

What is your feelings about the blockbuster trade that the Dodgers and your Reds just made?

It's financial. Depends on the next move. Reds get a decent lefty.
