I've watched Skip only because he was on ESPN after something else I was watching. But now I notice the star in your profile and realize why you might not hate him. He sucks cowboy dick for a living.

Cowherd's argument has some merit. The QB position in today's general era (2004-present) has more impact on wins and losses more than any era prior. I believe the league's position to shift rules in this direction went way too far, but that's another argument. If you have a true tier 1 QB - Rodgers/Brady/Garoppolo...heh - you pay them whatever, and you are more than just on your way. That team can just about win any game they are involved in. There is no other position...not even close...that makes that kind of difference.

Looking at the truely great defensive players from today's game, and they're not on the same level as a QB. Earl Thomas was at one point a true defensive superstar and the hub of what made Seattles defense as good as it was. I wouldn't pay him now, cause he's 30 and probably a descending player and Seattle is clearly in rebuild mode. Aaron Donald was the DPOY last year. The Rams defense was average, and their run defense was trash. Gurley was by far a more important player than Donald for the Rams...and he's not even the QB. JJ Watt was approaching all time status, but as been noted, nothing much came of it for the Texans. Mack? Gruden should've kept his trap shut, but he was correct. The Raiders defense was still garbage with him.

Having said that, I wouldn't have any issues if SF called up Oak and gave up their 1st+ next year for Mack, as he could be the guy to put the Niners over the edge.

Where I would disagree with Cowherd somewhat is that I think the big payments should be at the QB position only.

QB is always going to be the most important position on the field. And I think there are some good arguments as to why you should never pay a guy like Donald the amount of money he is demanding.

But using an argument of team performance after a free agent signing is a pretty terrible method of determining whether a FA worked or not in just about ANY sport other than basketball.

I brought up Rodgers and Brees only to illustrate that even as great as they are, they need help. it’s a team game. QBs are too overvalued. Maybe trash was too harsh, but me calling him that is more out of anger of him getting such a ridiculous contract after 5 games but there are so many all pro caliber players out there getting screwed by their front office because they aren’t a QB. Again....if JG is as good as advertised (and I believe he was) then that deal he got will be a steal in a couple of years. He alone, turned a 1-10 team to a 6-10 team. There are no defensive players in today's game that can make that kind of impact. If anything, you would need to add all three guys - Donald/Mack/Thomas - to the same team to have a similar impact.....and that's still debatable.

49ers lost a lot of close games where all they needed was average QB play to win. Jimmy did not single handedly turn them around. He just gave them something at the QB position that wasn’t completely awful.
