Is there anything here? Probably nothing more than coincidence. Probably more a reflection of scheduling than anything else. That and the fact that this team is winning games late that they would have lost in recent years. They are far better in the clutch now. Edwin Diaz pitching like a Cy Young candidate doesn't hurt either. If the Astro starting pitching pitchers were not pinetaring their way to absurd stats, Diaz would definitely be an early Cy candidate.

And we need to fatten up on the weak teams while we can. The schedule in June and July is not kind. 26 of the 51 games are against the Astros, Angels, Red Sox and Yankees. The wild card (or perhaps division, if you want to dream big) will be won or lost in those two months.

Basically you are substituting better defense for offense. Couple that with taking Gordon's below average defense in CF with Heredia who is probably slightly above average then you could paint a glass half full picture.

However with Gordon's injury that kind of throws a wrench into that theory. If he's truly only out a couple of weeks tho maybe this theory still holds true. Just try survive the next 10 days I guess

Surviving the next 10 is all the more challenging with Cruz and Haniger now banged up. Kudos to Leake for sending Oakland a message. It needed to be sent. But hitting Canha, their fourth or fifth biggest threat in their lineup, with an 88 mph fastball in the butt cheek hardly compensates for them hitting the wrist of our leading RBI guy.

I know that's going poss some people off.

I'm already on record saying I wanted Jerry fired last year.

But, in a way, they have to extend him. Not a single general manager that is worth a lick is going to want the Mariners job to replace Jerry, just end with another guy who lies his way to a job like Jack Z.

Jerry has put the future of the franchise on life support so might as well extend him so either he goes down with the ship or he can truly show he is smarter than every other person in baseball.

Mariners have been winning and competitive despite the absence of Cano, and Cruz thus far being a non factor. That's a good sign, I think. Maybe there is still life after Cruz and Cano.

Updated. The team is now 32-8 since Cano was injured/suspended. It's no wonder that Dipoto is publicly stating that Robbie is not guaranteed the starting job at second base when he returns. They don't have to kiss Robbie's ass anymore. The team has proven it can survive, if not flourish, without him.

How they are doing it is a mystery. Leake, Gonzales, LeBlanc are nothing special. But maybe they are the right type of pitcher for the current era of baseball, with all the strikeouts and homeruns. With 'the shift' forcing pull hitters to change their swing from a line drive type swing to a swing with a lift, more hitters are sitting on the fastball. That makes soft tossers who bend the ball well the new strikeout artists. There are still plenty of power pitchers around, but soft tossers who know how to pitch (and those three seemingly do) have become increasingly effective.
